Listen, O Coastlands - Mary Letter Day 3

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The LORD called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God.” And now the LORD says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and my God has become my strength—he says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Isaiah 49:1-6

Dear Auntie,

These dreams of mine are overwhelming me and it feels as if the Lord is speaking directly to me. I was sitting listening to Papa read from the Scriptures as we lit our candles. I heard the words of the prophet as if they were for me - to listen. And I must have looked quite peculiar, as Mama asked me if I was all right. I was feeling a bit sick to my stomach, surely just something I ate earlier in the day. And I was overwhelmed, as if the voice came for me alone. I told her I was fine, just a little tired. We finished our prayers and I excused myself and went to bed. Mama came in and checked on me and I assured her all was well, even though I knew all was not well.

In my dream last night, and I think it was a dream, I saw a mighty angel, shining bright and looking right at me. He came closer to me and called me by my name. He told me the Lord was pleased with me and had chosen me! Can you imagine? And that's when it got scary. He told me I was to bear the long awaited Messiah. Me?? I heard myself tell the angel how honored I was and how I would do whatever Yahweh asked. I was a exciting and movingly real dream. And to top it off, the angel told me you were with child! How silly a dream this was!

How can any of this be real? I haven't been with a man, don't know much about anything. And you, my dear Elizabeth, are long past the age of conception. I hope that doesn't hurt your feelings, but let's get real here. I woke up this morning, feeling very sick. I thought I better write to you and see how you are. You always have wise counsel and never make fun of me. I am so scared and so confused. Please write back and tell me what I should do.

love,

Mary

O Daughter of Zion - Maty Letter Day 2

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, ‘The Lord needs them.’ And he will send them immediately.” This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, “Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?” The crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.” Matthew 21:1-11

Dear Elizabeth,

The meal with Joseph and his family went as well as one can hope. Everyone was cordial and the men spent a good deal of time, heads together, talking like grain traders. The older women sat in the kitchen talking and laughing. His sister and I (the single gals) sat by ourselves out of doors, watching the stars and getting to know one another. She is very smart and funny. I am glad that she will be my family some day, way off in the future. It seems an agreement has been struck, although I will never know the actual details. Papa say that is for the men to worry about!

Lately, I have been hearing the Scriptures from Isaiah in a new way. The call to the daughter or daughters of Zion. So much of the Scripture talks to the men and yet I feel that we are all being called out to pay attention in the times. We are occupied people, and I wonder how long God would want us to be this way. So many people ache for justice and change, but we really don't know how it can happen. The Romans are strong and dangerous. We tiptoe around them and try to avoid their cruelty. I wonder what our God is doing in all of this. Oh, my thoughts wander. Time to pray.

Love,

Mary

First Sunday in Advent 2021

First Sunday in Advent

The Collect

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

 Old Testament Jeremiah 33:14-16

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."

Psalm 25:1-9

1 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul;
my God, I put my trust in you; *
let me not be humiliated,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.
2 Let none who look to you be put to shame; *
let the treacherous be
disappointed in their schemes.
3 Show me your ways, O LORD, *
and teach me your paths.
4 Lead me in your truth and teach me, *
for you are the God of my salvation;
in you have I trusted all the day long.
5 Remember, O LORD,
your compassion and love, *
for they are from everlasting.
6 Remember not the sins of
my youth and my transgressions; *
remember me according to your love
and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD.
7 Gracious and upright is the LORD; *
therefore he teaches sinners in his way.
8 He guides the humble in doing right *
and teaches his way to the lowly.
9 All the paths of the LORD
are love and faithfulness *
to those who keep his covenant
and his testimonies.

The New Testament 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13

How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

The Gospel Luke 21:25-36

Jesus said, "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. "Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

Dear Auntie Elizabeth,

I have been troubled by so much lately. I watch as so many of our people are treated so poorly by the occupying government. And I see how neighbors and friends are suffering and without so many things. They Roman officials who live in among us live lavish lifestyles and often take livestock and grain from folks without asking. I pray and ask for patience and insight, but I find myself still angry with our situation. And to top it off, my dreams have been very disturbing.

Last night, I dreamt of a child of mine. Really? I am too young to even think of having children! He was tall and strong and ready to take on the world. He radiated kindness and humility and yet was extraordinarily powerful. He looked in my eyes and spoke to me. He told me not to be afraid. I woke with a start and must have been screaming for Momma came rushing in. I told her I had a bad dream, but it really wasn't bad. Startling, really, and more like a vision or a sign than a warning. I have been wandering around all day in a haze. I thought you might understand this, my wise cousin. You have always brought me comfort!

Later today, Joseph will have dinner with us. He is very kind and handsome. I'm still not sure about marriage, but it is how Momma and Poppa have it arranged. I want to honor their choices in my life, and I hope, I hope, this can grow into some kind of love.

Keep me in your prayers, I think I might be going mad!

Love,

Mary

Serving

While Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and said to them on the way, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised.” Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:17-28

Loving Creator, you care for your world
giving stars to light our deepest darkness
rain and snow to refill our rivers and streams
and light to bring all our food to harvest.

We love to serve and share at holiday time
getting warm feelings from helping others
yet throughout the year we serve ourselves
and forget that we are called to serve always.

You came to our broken world as servant ruler
who gave your life so that all might live
yet we would parse out our sharing and serving
we serve when it works for our own self esteem.

Help us Lord to see the needs around us always
never let us shy away from being your servants
Let your love and kindness be within each of us
so our world is fed and watered by loving service. Amen.

A Thanksgiving Litany

Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'” Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:26-35

Great Creator author of all life
today we celebrate you abundance
the rivers, streams and great oceans
and the fertile ground that feeds us.
Bread of life, fill us with humble gratitude today.

We live in a country of confusion
where the people you planted here
have been removed and decimated
still they are here and live your love.
Bread of life, fill us with humble gratitude today.

We gather as families who have survived
grateful for your guidance and tender care
we embrace the little ones and sing our joy
for we are still here despite all the challenges.
Bread of life, fill us with humble gratitude today.

For the ancestors, who carried on faithfully
Bread of life, fill us with humble gratitude today.

For the descendants of the zealous and careless settlers.
Bread of life, fill us with humble gratitude today.

For all the people now who seek to repair and renew
Bread of life, fill us with humble gratitude today.

Make us instruments of your peace and justice now
Bread of life, fill us with humble gratitude today. Amen

Last Will Be First

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then who can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” Then Peter said in reply, “Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.” Matthew 19:23-30

Great Creator, you have blessed us all
with fertile earth and loving families
places of great beauty and holy sites
strong hearts to carry us through crisis.

The world may not see the beauty we see
nor appreciate the sacrifices we have made
but you know the hearts of all the people
and how possessions are not your blessings.

You told your disciples about your reign
a sacred time and place of sacrificial love
that all the displaced and forlorn outcasts
are at the heart of the world you love.

Help us to be sacrificial in our daily life
let us be those who honor your reign here
by making room for the stranger and alien
by joyfully giving up so that all may thrive. Amen.

Let the Children Come to Me

Then little children were being brought to Jesus in order that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples spoke sternly to those who brought them; but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” And he laid his hands on them and went on his way. Then someone came to him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “I have kept all these; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Matthew 19:13-22

Loving Creator, you love us from the start
you teach us to be childlike and generous
always considering the needs of others
gathering relations and not possessions.

We live in a world where we are judged
not by our generosity but by what we have
we are easily swayed by advertising
and lead away from being loving servants.

You encountered little children and held them
calling them the reign of God on the earth
and you embraced a young, wealthy man
who was grieving for his many possessions.

Help us to let go of worldly judgements
and open our hearts as children always do
to the love that is right here in front of us
and share what we have for love of the world. Amen.

Testing

When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. Large crowds followed him, and he cured them there. Some Pharisees came to him, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?” He said to them, “It was because you were so hard-hearted that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery.” His disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” But he said to them, “Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.” Matthew 19:1-12

Great Creator you know our hearts
we are often weak and led astray
we judge others while we are broken
and put others to tests we would fail.

Our world is broken and hurting today
anger and rage are bubbling over
yet you call us to consider kindness
and giving up to keep others from harm.

Our selfishness can do endless damage
and today you call us to pay attention
to the way we use and mistreat others
our carelessness with their future.

Lord, help us be willing to sacrifice
a bit of our pleasure for the sake of others
help us to be your love here on earth
so that healing and restoration can begin. Amen.

Sunday, November 21, 2021 Christ the King

                                            Christ The King

The Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Old Testament 2 Samuel 23:1-7

These are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favorite of the Strong One of Israel: The spirit of the LORD speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. Is not my house like this with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. Will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away; for they cannot be picked up with the hand; to touch them one uses an iron bar or the shaft of a spear. And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot.

Psalm 132:1-19

1 LORD, remember David, *
 and all the hardships he endured;
2 How he swore an oath to the LORD
and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:
3 "I will not come under the roof of my house," *
nor climb up into my bed;
4 I will not allow my eyes to sleep, *
 nor let my eyelids slumber;
5 Until I find a place for the LORD, *
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob."
6 "The ark! We heard it was in Ephratah; *
we found it in the fields of Jearim.
7 Let us go to God's dwelling place; *
let us fall upon our knees before his footstool."
8 Arise, O LORD, into your resting-place, *
you and the ark of your strength.
9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness; *
let your faithful people sing with joy.
10 For your servant David's sake, *
do not turn away the face of your Anointed.
11 The LORD has sworn an oath to David; *
in truth, he will not break it:
12 "A son, the fruit of your body *
will I set upon your throne.
13 If your children keep my covenant
and my testimonies that I shall teach them, *
their children will sit upon your throne for evermore."
14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; *
he has desired her for his habitation:
15 "This shall be my resting-place for ever; *
here will I dwell, for I delight in her.
16 I will surely bless her provisions, *
and satisfy her poor with bread.
17 I will clothe her priests with salvation, *
and her faithful people will rejoice and sing.
18 There will I make the horn of David flourish; *
I have prepared a lamp for my Anointed.
19 As for his enemies, I will clothe them with shame; *
but as for him, his crown will shine."

The Epistle Revelation 1:4b-8

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

The Gospel John 18:33-37

Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”

A Litany for Christ the King Sunday

Loving Creator you rule with love
you take us from the darkest places
bring us into the light of compassion
and restore us to the land of our people.
Jesus, King of our hearts, let us love as you love.

The world is weary from plaque and cruelty
justice is not served, the poor grow poorer
yet you have promised in the midst of crisis
to be our shield and strength in dangerous times.
Jesus, King of our hearts, let us love as you love.

The losses surround us and the dark creeps in
yet you are with us lighting our way forward
you promise to bring the wanderers back home
and set a table for those who are hungry now.
Jesus, King of our hearts, let us love as you love.

Help us to repent of our selfish ways and return to you
You are our God from the beginning of all time.
Jesus, King of our hearts, let us love as you love.

You loved our ancestors and taught them your ways
we have strayed and yet, time after time, you bring us home.
Jesus, King of our hearts, let us love as you love.

Make us your hands and your heart in the aching world
let us shine with you light in these dark and changing times.
Jesus, King of our hearts, let us love as you love.

You are Alpha and Omega, our beginning and our end
help us to mold our lives as  visions of your heart.
Jesus, King of our hearts, let us love as you love.

Lost Sheep

Jesus said, “Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven. What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost. “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” Matthew 18:10-20

Loving Creator you seek the lost
you call us to take care of little ones
you are always with the poorest of us
and standing with the outcasts and abused.

The world is a dangerous and confusing place
we often get lost and turned around crying out
we often give up hope that we cannot be heard
but you hear us and call you angels to come to us.

We live in times where the dangers are within
our hearts are hardened to the needs of others
we think only of ourselves as move about
yet still you call us to healing and reconciliation.

Let our hearts be broken open again, Lord
make our hands and bodies useful for you
give us strength to reach out to the outcasts
and gather the lost and forgotten in your name. Amen.

Childlike

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks! Occasions for stumbling are bound to come, but woe to the one by whom the stumbling block comes! “If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and to be thrown into the eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into the hell of fire.” Matthew 18:1-9

Loving Creator author of all goodness
you placed us all in families and clans
to be nurtured by loving parents
and to be taught by wise and patient elders.

Too often we act as big stumbling blocks
tripping up and pulling down the little ones
taking their love and faithfulness to lightly
and putting up obstacles in the sacred paths.

We fall down and you always pick us up
yet we often fail to reach out to help others
our pride and our self interest cloud our sight
and we miss the opportunities to help another.

Guide us, Lord, and keep us from stumbling
help us to be those who lift everyone up
give us humble and compassionate hearts
so our young can see and know your love now. Amen.

Casting A Hook

As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, ‘The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.’ And they were greatly distressed. When they reached Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and said, ‘Does your teacher not pay the temple tax?’ He said, ‘Yes, he does.’ And when he came home, Jesus spoke of it first, asking, ‘What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their children or from others?’ When Peter said, ‘From others’, Jesus said to him, ‘Then the children are free. However, so that we do not give offence to them, go to the lake and cast a hook; take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a coin; take that and give it to them for you and me.’ Matthew 17:22-27

Caring Creator you provide all our needs
you lead us to places of rest and comfort
you walk with us through the storms of life
and help us find treasure in the common places.

We worry and fret about so many things
our jobs, our health and our children's welfare
the world seems often dangerous and cruel
and we come up short way too regularly.

You were tested by the religious leaders
trying to find misbehavior where there was none
living with the poor and healing the sick
the tax was paid by simply casting a hook.

Help us to trust in your goodness daily
put prayers on our lips and love in our hearts
let our concerns be for those the world scorns
and make us be ready to follow where you lead. Amen.

Mustard Seed Fatih

When they came to the crowd, a man came to him, knelt before him, and said, ‘Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; he often falls into the fire and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.’ Jesus answered, ‘You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.’ And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there”, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.’ Matthew 17:14-21

Great Creator you planted love within each
nurtured us with wisdom and compassion
feeding us with shelter, food and good water
and setting us on the road of life long faith.

We simply stumble and get very fearful
feeling inadequate and unprepared
yet you know within each of us is the seed
of great miracles of faith and possibility.

Your disciples struggled and doubted
they had questions and we do as well
yet you shower us with patience and love
so that the small morsel might be great.

Help us step out in faith this day
trusting what little we have will be plenty
knowing that you have watered us well
and you love will see us through always. Amen.

The Collect
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Old Testament 1 Samuel 1:4-20
On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: “O LORD of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a Nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.” As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.” Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.” And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the LORD.”

The Psalm 1 Samuel 2:1-10

Hannah prayed and said,
“My heart exults in the LORD;
my strength is exalted in my God.
My mouth derides my enemies,
because I rejoice in my victory.
“There is no Holy One like the LORD,
no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.
Talk no more so very proudly,
let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the LORD is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.
The bows of the mighty are broken,
but the feeble gird on strength.
Those who were full have hired
themselves out for bread,
but those who were hungry
are fat with spoil.
The barren has borne seven,
but she who has many
children is forlorn.
The LORD kills and brings to life;
he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich;
he brings low, he also exalts.
He raises up the poor from the dust;
he lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honor.
For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's,
and on them he has set the world.
“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones,
but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness;
for not by might does one prevail.
The LORD! His adversaries shall be shattered;
the Most High will thunder in heaven.
The LORD will judge the ends of the earth;
he will give strength to his king,
and exalt the power of his anointed.”

The Epistle Hebrews 10:11-14 (15-18) 19-25

Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. [And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,” he also adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.] Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

The Gospel Mark 13:1-8

As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.”

Creator God, you have known us for the beginning
you have molded us and shaped us by love
lifted us up when we have fallen down and cried
and sought us out when we have wandered away.
Help us, Lord,  to trust you as the world turns again.

Our world is broken by disease and war
our families and churches feel scattered and torn
we ache to be brought together and mended
to be brought and planted again at home.
Help us, Lord, to trust you as the world turns again.

The darkness surrounds us and we feel fearful
yet you promised to be with us in all the terrors
you held us close even when we have not known
as your people we have often let go of our hope.
Help us, Lord, to trust you as the world turns again.

The cold winds and blowing snow reminds us to rest
Help us, Lord, to trust you as the world turns again.

The night drops down early and invite to tell stories
Help us, Lord, to trust you as the world turns again.

Mend us, mold us and renew us for your service.
Help us, Lord, to trust you as the world turns again. Amen.

Binding and Loosing

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. Matthew 16:13-20

Loving God, you know the seasons of life
we were swaddled and cradle boarded
kept tightly bound in love and safety
so we could know the security of home.

In school as children we were lined up
kept in rows and in perfect order
only yo run wildly onto the playground
releasing the overwhelming joy within.

As adults we bind ourselves to another
planting families and gardens together
you remind us that we have the keys
to bind and loose those around us.

Lord Jesus, help us to set free prisoners
to bind up the wounded and hold the sick
let the keys we have be for opening doors
and never locking your love out. Amen.

Veterans Day

The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test Jesus they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then he left them and went away. When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. Jesus said to them, “Watch out, and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” They said to one another, “It is because we have brought no bread.” And becoming aware of it, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? How could you fail to perceive that I was not speaking about bread? Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!” Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Matthew 16:1-12

Wondrous Creator, you offer us good teachers
in every generation they come to serve others
they use their warrior skills for the nations' good
and care for the young and the elderly at home.

These humble teachers are like good yeast
they plant seeds of hope and service in our lives
teach us the gift and the cost of true sacrifice
and lead by example in all that they do daily.

We are often captivated by sparkling leaders
who speak with great insight but who do not serve
they are catered to, spoiled and expect everything
while the gentle teachers are among the people.

Help us Lord to be like the good teachers
a little daily yeast so that all may grow strong
daily service and humble sacrifice always
so that your love flourishes again among the people. Amen.

Broken Pieces Left Over

After Jesus had left that place, he passed along the Sea of Galilee, and he went up the mountain, where he sat down. Great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the mute, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he cured them, so that the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” The disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in the desert to feed so great a crowd?” Jesus asked them, “How many loaves have you?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” Then ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, he took the seven loaves and the fish; and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all of them ate and were filled; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. Those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children. After sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. Matthew 15:29-39

Loving Creator, heart of the hungry and poor
you had compassion at the top of the mountain
making much out of our little inadequate offerings
feeding the crowd with great love and comfort.

We are often satisfied with what we have now
yet when crisis comes we cry out like children
wringing our hands and beating our chests
for our lack of care and consideration of others.

You took the small loaves and the few fish
and made them more than enough for the crowd
and you take the few small inadequate gifts we offer
and turn them into abundance for the many.

Help us to pick up the broken pieces left over
and make meals for those who are in need
help us to offer our broken pieces to you
trusting that you will make a feast for all. Amen

Great Is Your Faith

Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” He answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly. Matthew 15:21-28

Gracious Creator, we are born of the spirit
all of us from every nation and tribal group
are part of your living presence here
yet too many are left out and marginalized.

One mother was brave to confront the walls
the narrow minded way we exclude others
the tunnel vision we have about strangers
and the fears the keep us from welcoming.

Your disciples tried to protect you from her
but she persisted and answered your push back
you knew her mother's heart and ached
to bring healing and blessing to the child.

Help us Lord to bring down the barriers
that we set up to protect our fearful hearts
give us your heart of compassion and love
so that your healing might cover our earth. Amen.

From the Heart

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands before they eat.” He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’ But you say that whoever tells father or mother, ‘Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God,’ then that person need not honor the father. So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word of God. You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said: ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.'” Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, “Listen and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.” Then the disciples approached and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?” He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.” But Peter said to him, “Explain this parable to us.” Then he said, “Are you also still without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.” Matthew 15:1-20

Great Creator, you teach us honesty and humility
by showing us examples of those who are not
by helping us see the dangers of saying with our lips
what we will not live in our own hearts and lives.

Too often, religious leaders preach a good way
yet turn around and defile the world they are given
by living as if they are without sin and shame
taking advantage of the weak and the poor.

You lived with the poor and healed the broken
you saw the damage that hypocrisy can do
you taught us all to live with a  loving heart
and to keep our hearts loving and humble always.

Lord, help us this day to take serious your call
to live daily with humble and contrite hearts
to wake ready to serve others every morning
and to care for those you send with our whole hearts. Amen.

All Saints' Sunday 2021

The Collect
Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Old Testament Isaiah 25:6-9

On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Psalm 24
1 The earth is the LORD's and all that is in it, *

the world and all who dwell therein.
2 For it is he who founded it upon the seas *
and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep.
3 "Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? *
and who can stand in his holy place?"
4 "Those who have clean hands
and a pure heart, *
who have not pledged themselves to falsehood,
nor sworn by what is a fraud.
5 They shall receive a blessing from the LORD *
and a just reward from the God of their salvation."
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, *
of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.
7 Lift up your heads, O gates;
lift them high, O everlasting doors; *
and the King of glory shall come in.
8 "Who is this King of glory?" *
 "The LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle."
9 Lift up your heads, O gates;
lift them high, O everlasting doors; *
and the King of glory shall come in.
10 "Who is he, this King of glory?" *
"The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory."

The Epistle Revelation 21:1-6a

I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end."

The Gospel John 11:32-44

When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

                                                    A Litany for All Saints’

Creator God, you teach us the way of love

You made us in your image in all diversity

You gave us hearts full of compassion

And gave us hands to change the suffering here.

Lord, help us to honor our saints by serving you now.

There were some who lost land and families

Some who suffered and died for the people

All live for your justice and your living truth

That every one is precious in the sight of the One God.

Lord, help us to honor our saints by serving you now.

There is suffering and abuse on our streets

Folks are tormented and abused for who they are

You love is not honored your people disrespected

And you call us to be the saints for this very hour.

Lord, help us to honor our saints by serving you now.

We say the names of all those passed who are saints for us

(people say the names)

Lord, help us to honor our saints by serving you now.

We say the names of those who are saints here in the present

(people say the names)

Lord, help us to honor our saints by serving you now.

Gracious God, you show yourself in every people

You are heard whispering to us in our own languages

And you are with us as we live for justice and peace for all.

Lord, help us to honor our saints by serving you now.

Tender Plants

Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he replied, ‘No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’” Matthew 13:24-30

O Great Creator of planting and of harvest
out lives are filled with tender growing ones
who are fragile and could be destroyed
if we try to wrench out the weeds among them.

You called for us all to be pure in heart
patient and generous in all that we do
yet too often we want to remove trouble
when the trouble itself is a gift and a sign.

Jesus you walked among the simple people
knew they understood the balance in nature
lived with them and ate at table with the poor
knowing in them was the kingdom of heaven.

Let us have eyes to see the tender ones here
make us gentle and encouraging with them
let our lives be full of patience and understanding
so that you reign might be seen in us today. Amen.

Deceit

At that time Herod the ruler heard reports about Jesus; and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and for this reason these powers are at work in him." For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because John had been telling him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." Though Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded him as a prophet. But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company, and she pleased Herod so much that he promised on oath to grant her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter." The king was grieved, yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he commanded it to be given; he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. The head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who brought it to her mother. His disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went and told Jesus. Matthew 14:1-12

Gracious and loving Creator you live among us
and see the ways we are selfish and cunning
using beauty and talent to deceive others
covering our shameful deeds with misdirection.

You see us as we truly are, bare and unveiled
our secrets are not hidden, our lies not known
our selfish endeavors and manipulations
only bring tears to your eyes and sadness.

You made us all for love and to live truth
fashioned us as vessels of peace and kindness
made us in your holy image and love us still
despite all of our cruel and mean behaviors.

Precious Lord, help us to reform our ways
remove deceit and deception from our hearts
make us the instruments of love and hope
that the world so desperately needs this day. Amen.
