And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” And they departed and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.Luke 9:1-6
Shake Off the Dust
Heartless though it may seem
some will not be healed
some will refuse you and love
some would rather just be miserable.
Miserable is familiar friend
fear and loathing a daily visitor
expecting the worst of others
they write their own loneliness song.
Some would rather be alone that joyous
others would rather die than change
many don't believe they need to learn anymore
and most can't admit to their pain.
So we go dancing down the road
singing our choruses and laughing
for we are poor and free
loved and never left alone.
The dust can be their companion
for dust and bile they fed their guests
their derision and taunting their gifts
and we can leave them to it.
We continue on with light steps
we are no burden to one another
the Divine walks with us together
joy will meet us at the next gate.
