Abide in Me

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ So Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.’ He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. John 6:52-59

Frybread, again folks. Can't help myself. There is an intimacy with which Jesus understands his relationship to the Father and will all of us. It is family around a table, laughing, arguing and eating simple good food. That tenderness and intimacy is something the religious leaders can't understand since they live a life of rules. Jesus wants us to see our relationship as that teasing, frybread eating family table, where truth and jokes are told in the same breath and where we do our homework and cry in our coffee. Always in the midst of the joys and the pains and even the everyday challenges.

Wondrous Creator, you invite us all to your table
a place where our sorrows and joys can be transformed
into shared laughter, food and prayers for all people.

We often struggle and find ourselves so alone
we have no one to share our fears and hopes
and we fail to see you sitting with us breaking bread.

Let us come to the table in our raw brokenness
finding our fill in you and setting sail for tomorrow
with love in our hearts and bellies full or courage. Amen.
