When
Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down,
his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them,
saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:1-10
Yesterday was Mother's Day. It was a day filled with wonderful conversations and quite a few tears. We had time to skype with each of our children and to talk with our mothers. I couldn't hold back the tears as I miss my family so much. I truly know what I lack - my daughters and my family in close proximity. Days like yesterday bring it close to mind and heart.
Jesus spoke to the crowds from the mountain top and talked to them about being blessed. Those who are blessed are those who know their lack, who know their imperfections, their needs, their failures. Those who are honest about their needs will truly be blessed by God. It is when we pretend to be independent, self-sufficient and without need that we find ourselves adrift and alone. God is always more willing to come to our aide with blessing than we are to ask.
Today I ask God to help me be honest with God. May we all recognize our incompleteness and go to the source, to the Divine, who loves us more than we can even understand or imagine. May we have the courage to be honest about our need so that God can truly bless us today.
