Feast of St. Francis

At that time Jesus said, ‘I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’  Matthew 11:25-30

It was deep winter when we arrived in Assisi and snow was on the ground. We had the mountain oratory to ourselves. There was an awesome silence that surrounded us and we surrendered ourselves to the holiness of the place. Certain folks who have walked the earth before us, inspire us still. Francis is one of those, as he lived a life of compassion for all of creation, and seeing God in every living thing.

Jesus walked this earth so that we might be connected with our Creator. The source of all compassion and love was willing to dwell among us so that we might know gentleness and compassion. We are reminded on this day, especially, to see the God's loving touch in all our lives and in all Creation. May our response be like that of Francis - to live for the care and feeding of the world.

Today, I ask God to open my eyes and heart to the beauty and compassion of God in every aspect of this world. May we be gracious and humble as we rejoice in God's loving presence with us in all creation.
