Canterbury Tales 2.0 Day Six August 1, 2022

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” ’) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known. John 1:1-18

It was a full Sunday. We went to the Cathedral for a wonderful worship service. We got there early and were led in by a side entrance. Before everyone arrived I had time to look around and observe. It was quite awhile before the bishops filed in around me. I watched the stewards and the other cathedral personnel, the back stage crew as it were, making everything ready. The unseen people who really make the event happen. I have encountered many delightful folks here, the unsung heroes, who make us all function. From the chef in the kitchen to the servers and constables, they all testify in their actions to the love of God made real. No sermon or choir can top their love made visible.

Loving Creator, you gave us you Word
he dwelt among us and dwells with us still
in the quiet service and gentle smiles
of those who live their lives to serve.
Help us to receive grace upon grace
as we follow the example of your Son
who offered his life for the life of all
sharing your love as we serve others. Amen.

Canterbury Tales 2.0 Day Five Sunday, July 31st, 2022

The Collect
Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

 Old Testament Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23

Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. I, the Teacher, when king over Israel in Jerusalem, applied my mind to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven; it is an unhappy business that God has given to human beings to be busy with. I saw all the deeds that are done under the sun; and see, all is vanity and a chasing after wind. I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me -- and who knows whether they will be wise or foolish? Yet they will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. So I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labors under the sun, because sometimes one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by another who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. What do mortals get from all the toil and strain with which they toil under the sun? For all their days are full of pain, and their work is a vexation; even at night their minds do not rest. This also is vanity.

Psalm 49:1-11

1 Hear this, all you peoples;
hearken, all you who dwell
in the world, *
you of high degree and low,
rich and poor together.
2 My mouth shall speak of wisdom, *
and my heart shall meditate
on understanding.
3 I will incline my ear to a proverb *
and set forth my riddle upon the harp.
4 Why should I be afraid in evil days, *
when the wickedness of those
at my heels surrounds me,
5 The wickedness of those
who put their trust in their goods, *
and boast of their great riches?
6 We can never ransom ourselves, *
or deliver to God the price of our life;
7 For the ransom of our life is so great, *
that we should never have enough to pay it,
8 In order to live for ever and ever, *
and never see the grave.
9 For we see that the wise die also;
like the dull and stupid they perish *
and leave their wealth to those
who come after them.
10 Their graves shall be their homes for ever,
their dwelling places from generation to generation, *
though they call the lands after their own names.
11 Even though honored, they cannot live for ever; *
they are like the beasts that perish.

The Epistle Colossians 3:1-11

If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things-- anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all!

The Gospel Luke 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." But he said to him, "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?" And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, `What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, `I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, `Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, `You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God."

Today we head to the Cathedral for Sunday worship. The bishops will be all decked out in rochet and chimere. I have to go in early to sit in the choir while most everyone else processes in. I have been thinking a good deal about how humbling all of this is, having to wait for transportation and rely on others to push me around. I want to do it myself. Yet the whole meat of the Gospel is our reliance on God in Christ. Jesus at the center of all. We can parade around in finery and exhibit our treasures. Yet we are all called to care for the least among us and be humble at all times. I am reminded of Tiny Tim's reflection from the Christmas Carol "He hoped the people saw him in the church, because he was a cripple, and it might be pleasant to them to remember upon Christmas day who made lame beggars walk, and blind men see." We can only hope that our presence, however humble remind others of Jesus.

Wondrous Creator, we gather in our diversity
from high and lowly places, poor and wealthy
to pray together and listen to your leading
asking for new hearts of compassion and love.
Precious Savior, come and abide here with us.

We come from the four corners of mother earth
we have squandered and abused your riches
this church has often abused in the your name
and we kneel before you asking for new hearts.
Precious Savior, come and abide here with us.

The world is aching and spinning off kilter
and we have been a huge part of the problem
help us to draw near, humbling ourselves
seeking your forgiveness and your mercy.
Precious Savior, come and abide here with us.

We come to this ancient, beautiful, holy place
let us not be awed by opulence and glitter.
Precious Savior, come and abide here with us.

Take away our pride and our arrogance
make us your children for the coming age.
Precious Savior, come and abide here with us.

You gave your all so we might live in you
let your light shine through us now and always.
Precious Savior, come and abide here with us. Amen.

Canterbury Tales 2.0 Day Four 7/30/22

1 The Lord is my shepherd; *
I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures *
and leads me beside still waters.
3 He revives my soul *
and guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake.
4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; *
for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *
you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over.
6 Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, *
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23

Today we spent our second day in retreat in the morning at the cathedral. We had lunch in the shade under ancient trees. I am in a wheelchair since I cannot walk very far. As we sat in the cool of tree, we greeted other bishops and spoke to several. Two bishops from South Sudan approached me and we visited for a time. Then they asked to take my picture. They told me they wanted to show the people back home that a disability does not keep one from serving as clergy or even a bishop. They inquired whether I can still preach and lead as well as confirm, and I said yes. They were so happy to share me with their people. I was so moved by their care and concern. I also realize I have little idea of the challenges they face. May God give me the ears to listen deeply every day.

Magnificent Creator, you see the whole creation
and you smile on all you have nurtured and made
despite our conflicts and constant confusion
you find way to bring us to the right pathways.
We see only a shallow part and think we know all
yet you remind us to be humble and seek you
as you find safe passage and sanctuary for all
and make us your children despite our ignorance.
Help us to be silent as other share their stories
and let us be witness to your transforming love. Amen.

Canterbury Tales 2.0 Day Three 7/29/22

He came to his home town and began to teach the people in their synagogue, so that they were astounded and said, ‘Where did this man get this wisdom and these deeds of power? Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?’ And they took offence at him. But Jesus said to them, ‘Prophets are not without honor except in their own country and in their own house.’ And he did not do many deeds of power there, because of their unbelief. Matthew 13:54-58

Today began with gathering at the Canterbury Cathedral for a two day retreat. We prayed and heard reflections and shared Eucharist. We also shared food and conversation.  This place, rich in Anglican history, is also a place of terrible disagreements and violence throughout it's history. Our holy places can be places of wonderful spiritual moments and they can be devoid of any spiritual power as well. Both unbelief and rigid belief can temporarily halt the healing power of God's love. Our work here, from my vantage point, is to listen deeply, talk little and witness the power of Christ's love in others. None of us has the corner on our Creator's truth. May prayer is for a turning of hearts, an opening of minds and God's loving Spirit among us all.

Wondrous Creator you created such diversity
of people, culture, language and experience
and you dwell within each and every one of us.
Help the Bishops gathered here to see your smile
across the face of a stranger who become friend
and help us know your incarnate love as we reach
not for solutions but for holy and loving relationships.
Make us humble as we voice for the voiceless
and make us silent as we listen to your still small voice. Amen.

Canterbury Tales 2.0 Day 2 7/28/22

‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ‘Have you understood all this?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.’ When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place. Matthew 13:47-53

Today was the first day of the Lambeth Conference which included speeches by the Archbishop, his wife and members of his staff. We then had lunch and went into small groups, returning to the discussion groups many of us participated in over the last year. Limited to a wheelchair, I sat in the sun with a collection of bishops from across the communion including Pakistan, Kenya, South Sudan, Canada and the US. We spoke of the challenges of Covid and blessings we have received in the midst of a pandemic. We know we come from very different contexts, theologies and cultures, but we all felt for others' challenges and rejoiced together in the blessings. This is a place of a wide net. May all who are drawn in be blessed see each other as  precious treasure, both new and old. May we never set aside anyone's gifts or their way of worship.

Blessed Creator, heart of your creation
we who are honored to gather here
are anxious to know your will for all of us
and receive you blessings for every corner.
Let us listen more than we speak out
help us to pardon more than we offend
give us patience to see your possibilities rising
and help us make way for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Canterbury Tales 2.0 Day One 7/27/22

Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, ‘Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.’ He answered, ‘The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen! Matthew 13:36-43

We arrived yesterday to cooler weather and terrific volunteers. The accommodations are good and I was unpacking after a rest, when stepping up into our bathroom, my Achilles tendon on my right leg seemed to snap and I ended up in A & E (accident and emergency). Now I'm in a Beckham boot. I heard my Mama say, "the devil is working overtime", and all I wanted t do was return home. Toss in the towel. We are all called to hard places and are often overcome with weeds and challenges of all sorts. But we are supposed to be here, called by the people and God to voice the needs of the voiceless.  May the coming days be shining light, the work of our Creator, and may all have the heart of Christ.

Gracious Creator, you put us in a wide tent
opening the flaps to all who need shelter
yet we often keep out those who are different
and build walls to shield ourselves for discomfort.
Make us uncomfortable during the coming days
move our hearts with great compassion and love
as we listen and draw near with your understanding
as we expand our vision through your deep love.
Take away all pride and spiteful arrogance
make us quick to laugh and quicker to cry
may we look beyond difference to you
and become one people, the family of God. Amen.

Feast of Mary Magdalene

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her. John 20:11-18

As we prepare to go to Lambeth, I am pondering who has been invited and who has not. Years ago there were no women there. Now, the spouses of openly gay bishops are not invited. Last Lambeth, I was disinvited, due to the complex politics of the day. Certain types of people are often not invited to the table. Mary Magdalene is one of those people. Yet, God invited her to be the first to hold the risen Jesus, first at the table for the resurrection. What is our Creator saying to us as we think about the invited and the uninvited. I believe there is plenty room at God's table and many would be shocked at who our Creator puts first.

Gracious Creator, source of all welcome
you spread a bounteous feast for all
yet some are excluded and turned away.
You called Mary Magdalene by name
in the chill of the morning garden
giving her the first sight of new life
making her first witness to the resurrection.
Remake us into your people of welcome
help us to set the table and make a place for all
and let your love shine through our simple tables. Amen.

Weeping Bitterly

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant-girl came to him and said, ‘You also were with Jesus the Galilean.’ But he denied it before all of them, saying, ‘I do not know what you are talking about.’ When he went out to the porch, another servant-girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, ‘This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.’ Again he denied it with an oath, ‘I do not know the man.’ After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, ‘Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you.’ Then he began to curse, and he swore an oath, ‘I do not know the man!’ At that moment the cock crowed. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: ‘Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.’ And he went out and wept
bitterly. Matthew 26:69-75

I have wept bitterly with shame anger and frustration, especially when I have faced my own failure. We cry for many reasons. We weep with sorrow and loss, and with overwhelming wonder and joy. Bitter tears come to us when we know better and our fears have triumphed over love. When we are so afraid that we cannot do what we want to do. Peter stands with us all when we are in the dark places, facing our failures and our lack. "Jesus knows our every weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer."

Loving Creator, who fashioned us prefect and vulnerable
we find ourselves surrounded by pain and contradiction
absorbed with our fears, our failures and our lacking.
Yet you loved Peter and forgave him his failing
despite his quick denials and his abandonment
you entrusted him with the future of your people.
Give us your strength to face our very real failings
set our feet on the road of justice and renewal
and make us your followers as we love others. Amen.

Sentenced

Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, in whose house the scribes and the elders had gathered. But Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest; and going inside, he sat with the guards in order to see how this would end. Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’” The high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?” But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” They answered, “He deserves death.” Then they spat in his face and struck him; and some slapped him, saying, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who is it that struck you?” Matthew 26:57-68

In this country, the population of our prisons are overwhelming people of color. Although we talk about fair trials and equal justice, the truth is harder to bear. We jail Black, Latinos and Indigenous people more than any other groups. They are often those without decent lawyers and the money to pay for their defense. In our Gospel, we find Jesus, a poor man of color, standing before the high priest, who has already decided his fate. When we visit prisons, so we see Jesus among them? When we watch the news do we imagine the arrest of our Savior?

Dearest Creator, source of true justice and freedom
you call us to compassion and daily forgiveness
yet we clamor to jail all those we are afraid of
and turn our eyes away from true human need.
Give us new eyes and new spirits, O Lord
help us to see your face among the accused
move us to compassion and action for the poor
and make us your people on this earth again. Amen.

Deserted

While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him.” At once he came up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him. Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you are here to do.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. Suddenly, one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way?” At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. But all this has taken place, so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. Matthew 26:47-56

There is nothing much worse than being abandoned by friends and loved ones, alone to face the coming days. For Jesus, this meant death. For us, it rarely means death, but great, painful loss. When we are on our own, especially when we are usually with loving others, it can feel like a kind of death. During the worst of Covid times, many folks felt desertion for the first time. The overwhelming isolation and pain of loss is still traumatizing many. Most of us experience abandonment for a season. For us, Jesus knew desertion, betrayal and abandonment for our salvation. I am reminded in times when feeling abandoned, that God is truly present then, anyway.

Wondrous God you set us in family and community
made us as being of relationship and support
yet we often run away when things get difficult.
We live in a world where abandonment and neglect
are the currency and standards on our streets
and we rarely do anything for those in great need.
Help us be those who know the pain of isolation
and respond with compassion and constant care
so your love might live with us in these times. Amen.

Watch and Pray

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and agitated. Then he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.” And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.” Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Again he went away for the second time and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.”

There are times in my life, not often, when I have had trouble sleeping, mostly from pain or worry. Often then, in the wee hours of the morning, my prayer is never profound but a simple "help me, Lord." The wee hours of the morning strip from us the arrogance and falsehoods we hide in the light of day. In the middle of the night our imperfections cry out to God.  Jesus loved his disciples in their very weakness. And this frail flesh we live in, mine and yours, we are loved completely despite our weaknesses.

Loving God, who know our weakness and failings
you ask us to watch in pray in dangerous times
yet we fall asleep and fail to keep watch in the dark.
You love us all despite our failure and our shame
you embrace our broken spirits and renew us
you suffered for us then and you take on our pain now.
Let us rise to a new day of your hope and healing
inspired by your sacrificial and all encompassing love. Amen.

Proper 11, Sunday, July 17th. 2002

Proper 11, Sunday, July 17th. 2002

The Collect
Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Old Testament Genesis 18:1-10a

The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, "My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on-- since you have come to your servant." So they said, "Do as you have said." And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, "Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes." Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. They said to him, "Where is your wife Sarah?" And he said, "There, in the tent." Then one said, "I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son."

Psalm 15

1 LORD, who may dwell
in your tabernacle? *
who may abide upon your holy hill?
2 Whoever leads a blameless life
and does what is right, *
who speaks the truth from his heart.
3 There is no guile upon his tongue;
he does no evil to his friend; *
he does not heap contempt
upon his neighbor.
4 In his sight the wicked is rejected, *
but he honors those who fear the LORD.
5 He has sworn to do no wrong *
and does not take back his word.
6 He does not give his money
in hope of gain, *
nor does he take a bribe
against the innocent.
7 Whoever does these things *
shall never be overthrown.

The Epistle Colossians 1:15-28

Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him-- provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel. I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according to God's commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

The Gospel Luke 10:38-42

As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

I am one of four sisters, although we re now three since my sister Pegi passed in 1990. We are all very different. Some are industrious and set on to the work needing to be done. Others have their head in the clouds and find ways to avoid the chores. I am a mother of three women, who are very different as well. They live their lives and face the world in different and wonderful ways. And they can drive each other crazy. My sisters still can drive me crazy and I laugh about the many times I was left with all the chores. Needless to say, this Gospel is often difficult for me. If Mary had just helped Martha, both would have been able to sit with Jesus. And, if Martha had just put down her list, she could have sat and might have gotten her sisters' help afterwards. God invites us on this season to choose wisely, careful with what we pick up and what we let go. And giving time to Christ's presence is always important.

A Litany for a Summer Sunday

Gracious Creator, your abundance is evident
in the many fruits that are ripening daily
in the warmth that surrounds us making growth
and the summer storms which replenish the waters.
Dear Savior, help us to set aside our worries and come to you.

There is much worry and violence in our world
we fear our prayers and hard work are useless
yet you told Martha to rest for a season and listen
and you call us all to follow you in our every day.
Dear Savior, help us to set aside our worries and come to you.

We long for a renewal of this precious planet
we ache for wars to cease and violence to end
yet we wrap ourselves in aggression and fighting
instead of letting go to your loving peace,
Dear Savior, help us to set aside our worries and come to you.

We are weak and worried with poverty all around
yet in the stillness of our dark nights you call to us.
Dear Savior, help us to set aside our worries and come to you.

We work for financial security and beautiful things
and we forget to make our hearts and homes welcoming.
Dear Savior, help us to set aside our worries and come to you.

You have promised to be with us in all our storms
help us to rest in your love and share what we have.
Dear Savior, help us to set aside our worries and come to you. Amen.

Betrayal

On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve; and while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” And they became greatly distressed and began to say to him one after another, “Surely not I, Lord?” He answered, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.” Judas, who betrayed him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” He replied, “You have said so.” Matthew 26:17-25

We can be hurt by words and actions of strangers. But betrayal is only done by beloved friends and family. Betrayal is heart break, a loss so profound most never recover. The greatest gift of our faith came through the worst betrayal. Our Creator is constantly renewing the most broken hearts and healing the tears in our trust and relationships. We betray often, yet God is more ready to forgive and heal than we are to ask. May we be those who ask, and find ways to repair the breaches that we have caused.

Loving Creator, who is the source of love
from you flows forgiveness and healing
yet we are reluctant to seek your blessings.
Help us to humble ourselves every day
making room for your light to shine within
opening our spirits to your healing and grace
and making us people who care for your people. Amen.

In Remembrance of Her

When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and they conspired to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. But they said, “Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.” Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. But when the disciples saw it, they were angry and said, “Why this waste? For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service for me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. By pouring this ointment on my body she has prepared me for burial. Truly I tell you, wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.” Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I betray him to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. Matthew 26:1-16

For most of history, women's sacrifices and gifts have been overlooked. The church kept women from holy orders for a very long time. Yet Jesus reminds us that her gift and her witness are at the heart of the Gospel. An obscure woman, an outcast, showed love and honor when the leadership did not. In fact, her act ignited their deep seated hate. The plot to kill was put into action. I am reminded of a phrase of my Momma's. "You know you're getting close to God when the devil starts working overtime!"

Gracious Creator, who gives your spirit to us all
and who moves the hearts of the marginalized
to see the hope of your presence and salvation
when those who are in authority cannot or will not.
Move us to our knees for service and love
move our feet to go where you need us to be
help us to be fearless in the face of great violence
and let us serve by caring for the world you made. Amen.

To the Least

Jesus said, “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:31-46 (NRSV)

I am always surprised by the people that ask how they can help, then think the answer they get is too small. Folks often want to be heroes and get attention for their giving, when God actually asks us to give  little, everyday. Repeatedly, Jesus teaches his disciples that a visit, a welcome, a cup of water, some clothing to the least among us is loving Jesus. Serving the world around us is serving our Creator.

Gracious Creator, you bless us abundantly
yet we whine and worry that we lack enough
and fail to see the misery and need around us.
Open our eyes to the people you send our way
open our hearts to see you in every one of them
and humble us so what little we can give
might be  blessing and a gift for the least. Amen.

Talents - Leaving Baltimore

Jesus said, “For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’” Matthew 25:14-30

I came to college here in 1973. It was a tenaciously hopeful, gritty place then and still is. Here is where I learned the little I had could be used for good, and if I worked with others, if we pooled our limited resources, we could make a great impact. Nearly 50 years later, leaving here from General Convention, I am reminded of the small churches and ministries who have made huge impacts. They make stone soup, are happy joyful places, serving their people and their communities. May we all do likewise.

Loving Creator your guide us all on our way
shedding light in our darkness, bringing insight
washing us with new hope and possibilities
when fear and lack infect our very souls.
Send us forth from this place with new vision
help us to trust you for increase and abundance
let us know we are loved and care for still. Amen.

Keep Awake - General Convention 80 Final Day

Jesus said, “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Matthew 25:1-13

We have been gathered here in Baltimore under tight restrictions due to Covid and have been doing our work in a shortened time. We have worked night and day to resolve the issues of our church. And, the unplanned and spirit filled moments abound. We have been able to work and also rejoice when the Holy Spirit breaks in, and tells us we are in holy and fragile times. It has been hard to keep awake sometimes, but God still moves in the quiet conversation and in the small changes of heart that become a tidal wave of compassion.

Wondrous Creator, you bless us with new vision
even when our eyes dim and we are so weary
you come to us in unexpected places and times
renewing the face of the earth and the hearts of the people.
Help us to stand firm in faith so we can be ready
equipped to follow you in these dangerous times
joyful and expectant in every breath we take. Amen.

Go and Do Likewise - Sunday July 10th - General Convention Day 3

Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, "Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." Luke 10:25

Jesus said, "go and do likewise." We are quick to judge the failure of others, yet we often give ourselves and our institutions a pass. Many of us worry that our world is falling apart and democracy in this country has been damaged. Yet we do not practice what we have been called to. We do not tend to the strangers, the wounded and the outcasts. We walk on the other side, not wanting to sully ourselves or be caught in other peoples' drama. Yet it is where we are called. To the broken, the shunned, the lost in order to do likewise.

Wondrous Creator, who sits with the stranger
who inhabits the broken people and places
help us never to avoid the darkest moments
and make us your people as we serve others.
Savior, give us the strength to go and do likewise.

We are weak and fearful and yet you love us
you have called us despite our weaknesses
sent us despite our blindness and our wanderings
strengthening us as one diverse and beautiful body.
Savior, give us the strength to go and do likewise.

The religious leaders ignored the suffering neighbor
and many leaders do not acknowledge our neighbors
today we can bring your balm and healing to all
or we can build new walls in our fearfulness.
Savior, give us the strength to go and do likewise.

Replace our fears with your boundless love
make us fit to gather all the fragments in one family
Savior, give us the strength to go and do likewise.

You have suffered and died so we might be free
make us free to love without any boundaries.
Savior, give us the strength to go and do likewise.

Oh, Savior, send us where we are afraid to go
and help us to find you among the least of us.
Savior, give us the strength to go and do likewise. Amen.

Rooted - General Convention Day 2

‘From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Matthew 24:32-35

We gathered and heard powerful words from our Presiding Bishop and then got tangled up in technology - or lack thereof. We found a way through a got through some legislation, along with hearing powerful testimony. I am aware of the anxieties and tensions that surround us on all sides. Yet we are rooted in a strong, secure tree, a community that is shaded and fed by the love of God. We are promised that we are embedded in the heart of God, and the Incarnate Word, which is love will never cease.

Loving Creator, we are rooted in you
fed and cherished as beloved children
you shade us and feed us for the work ahead.
Help us to trust in your word and live love
let your compassion and patience be our guide
and let none of us put ourselves first today. Amen.

Gathered From the Four Winds

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see “the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven” with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Matthew 24:30-31

General Convention begins tomorrow morning with worship. The church is gathered from the four winds, from the wide expanse of our church, to pray, deliberate, and to seek God's direction for us all. We are a diverse and complicated people, facing challenging times together. We can all wonder if these are end times, what with climate change, violence everywhere, and radical losses of human rights. We are invited to be one body together, to lean in and seek renewal together. The Creator seeks mending and healing at all times, and love will be our road forward. We need each other more than we need to be right.

Great Creator, you breathe the world into being
and gather us from far flung places to be your people
may we be honored to be among our siblings here
and make every word and action one of mending.
Let these times be the beginning of our renewal
a time when the broken hoops are mended
and our circle is made strong again in your love. Amen.

Birth Pangs - General Convention

As Jesus came out of the temple and was going away, his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. Then he asked them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah!’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birthpangs. “Then they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of my name. Then many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:1-14

We live in a time when the our church and our world are changing rapidly. Some see signs and forecast doom, and others see the signs and know it to be rebirth. Having birthed three babies, without any pain medication whatsoever, "birthpangs" are intense and very real. Your whole bodies shakes, and it can feel as if this is the end. We are living in these kind of times. Yet, we also have the hope that, as we reverberate from the pain and trauma, we might draw together and trust God with every breath. Our loving Creator promises more than a shattering end. There is life anew and resurrection always around the corner.

Loving Creator, we are made in your image
we are your offspring and your people
yet we see the signs and anticipate destruction.
You have promised more love than we can receive
and more sunrises than we can even imagine.
Give us strength and breath despite the pains
make us patient and faithful in these hard times
and help us to trust our Savior ever deeper
knowing that new life comes from such times. Amen.

Gathering the Brood

‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you, desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” ’ Matthew 23:37-39

As a mother of three wonderful women, I always want to gather them up and hold them when trouble happens. The desire to protect those we love is often overpowering. It seems as it must be instilled by the Creator, for we hear Jesus aching for Jerusalem and his desire to gather them as a brood for their care and protect them. If we broken and fallible humans can know what that kind of love is, how much more does God ache to protect us as we flail and wander into all sorts of messes. As we move to General Convention as a church, I pray for God's protection for us all. May we honor our prophets and messengers and be blessed by all who we walk with in the coming days.

Loving Creator, Lord of this round earth
may we know your love as a deep aching
to gather us and swaddle us in our troubles
binding us together as one family, one people.
Help us to love like you have taught us
help us to listen before we speak and scream
let us be your family, your people
so that all our communities might be healed. Amen.

Justice, Mercy and Faith

‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean. Matthew 23:23-26

We live in a time when law and justice seem to mean only the meting out punishment, getting even, rather than mercy, faithfulness and humility. God's law of love requires all of us to be merciful and faithful, yet we want those things only for ourselves and not for others. There is no liberty or freedom without the love of our Creator who blesses us daily with abundance and new possibility. May we demonstrate our faithfulness by demonstrating justice and mercy in every moment.

Gracious Creator, you know our foolish ways
yet you love us despite our cruelty and hurt
your love is bigger than our failures and frustrations.
Put your love of justice and mercy our hearts
implant us with tender faithfulness that sees more
that the brokenness all around us each day.
Let our eyes behold you as we care for others
and let our souls be gladden as we reach out in love. Amen.

Independence Day 2022

Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:43-48

Today, there will be parades and fireworks across our country in small and large towns everywhere. Independence is a precious thing and something to be celebrated, even though, in recent days, our independence has been threatened and scarred. My Cherokee mother has always stood for the kind of independence worth protecting. She opened her heart to kids from all walks of life, feeding them and making a place at the table. No matter how many children and adults landed on our lawn after the 4th of July parade, she greeted and welcomed all. She was following the love of her savior and she lived it every day.

Creator, source of life and our liberty
we often pursue our happiness
to the destruction of our neighbors/
Set us free from petty selfishness
set us free from the greed which binds us
and make us your children free to love
everyone who you set on our path always. Amen.

Fourth Sunday After Pentecost - July 3, 2022

Collect
O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

 Old Testament Isaiah 66:10-14

Thus says the Lord: "Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her; rejoice with her in joy, all you who mourn over her-- that you may nurse and be satisfied from her consoling breast; that you may drink deeply with delight from her glorious bosom. For thus says the Lord: I will extend prosperity to her like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse and be carried on her arm, and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your bodies shall flourish like the grass; and it shall be known that the hand of the Lord is with his servants, and his indignation is against his enemies."

 Psalm 66:1-8

1 Be joyful in God, all you lands; *
 sing the glory of his Name;
sing the glory of his praise.
2 Say to God, "How awesome
are your deeds! *
because of your great strength
your enemies cringe before you.
3 All the earth bows down before you, *
sings to you, sings out your Name."
4 Come now and see the works of God, *
how wonderful he is in
his doing toward all people.
5 He turned the sea into dry land,
so that they went through the water on foot, *
and there we rejoiced in him.
 6 In his might he rules for ever;
his eyes keep watch over the nations; *
let no rebel rise up against him.
7 Bless our God, you peoples; *
make the voice of his praise to be heard;
8 Who holds our souls in life, *
and will not allow our feet to slip.

 The Epistle Galatians 6:1-16

My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor's work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads. Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher. Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised-- only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule-- peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

The Gospel Luke 10:1-11, 16-20

The Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, `Peace to this house!' And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, `The kingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, `Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.' "Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!" He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

As we look to tomorrow, the national celebration of our independence, we have to wonder how this liberty came to pass. There were many valiant heroes in our history and many who claimed liberty so that could exploit others. No history, no matter how we celebrate, is not fraught with cruelty, abuse and selfishness. To truly celebrate tomorrow, we might want to reflect on just how we got here, and how we can pave a path of true justice and liberty for all. Jesus sent his 72 out, on the road to bring good news and healing. Many have distorted that charge. Let us be those who truly carry God's love, free of judgement and selfishness.

Wondrous Creator you planted us here
in this fine land so abundant and lush
yet we have often taken for ourselves
that which belong to another people.
Lord. make us free to carry your love today.

We have bound those who were different
we have taken our freedom too lightly
and punished those who ache to be free as well.
Lord. make us free to carry your love today.

There are daily challenges to our freedoms
yet the privileged and the wealthy don't see it
they hide behind the walls they have built
as the needy and homeless cry out to you.
Lord. make us free to carry your love today.

Let us carry your love out to every community
and let set the prisoners free to thrive again.
Lord. make us free to carry your love today.

As we travel the road where you call us
make us humble to see you in the strangers.
Lord. make us free to carry your love today.

May your heart be within each of us
may your love always be our map and our guide.
Lord. make us free to carry your love today. Amen.
