New Years Day 2022 - Mary Letter Day 31

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel’, which means, ‘God is with us.’ When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25

Dear Elizabeth,

I am writing to you because I really wish we could be together and you could counsel me. I do not want to frighten Mama and Papa, but things seem really dangerous here. Reports are coming from many people that there is a child who the governor wants to destroy. There were troops traveling the nearby road looking for little boys especially. Since our dwelling is off the back of the inn we were safe from their inquiries for now. I am staying inside with our little boy during the daytime. I would love to take him out to walk in the market and greet our neighbors but I fear for his life. How could God call us to be the parents of this wonder child, only to put his life in danger so quickly. Joseph is almost finished with the business at hand. We may have to come to your house before heading home. No one would know us in your district.

We sit outside on cool nights looking up at the stars. Joseph often sings to our little one, who love to reach up for the stars. He delights in the night sky and the many bright stars away from the light and noise of the city. We feel safe at night. We are very careful and our hosts have been good about covering for us. If someone asks who we are, they make up pretty convincing stories. It won't last forever, we know, so we are making several plans to find a way back to you and then on to home. Joseph worries a good deal but remains calm and reassures me when I am troubled. He reminds me that God brought us this far, and we must trust God to get us through. Pray for us, please. I fear the days ahead might be more challenging and scary than we had hoped.

love,

Mary

Sing Praises - Mary Letter Day 30

1 Clap your hands, all you peoples; *
shout to God with a cry of joy.
2 For the Lord Most High
is to be feared; *
he is the great King over all the earth.
3 He subdues the peoples under us, *
and the nations under our feet.
4 He chooses our inheritance for us, *
the pride of Jacob whom he loves.
5 God has gone up with a shout, *
the Lord with the sound of the ram's-horn.

6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; *
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is King of all the earth; *
sing praises with all your skill.
8 God reigns over the nations; *
God sits upon his holy throne.
9 The nobles of the peoples
have gathered together *
with the people of the God of Abraham.
10 The rulers of the earth belong to God, *
and he is highly exalted. Psalm 47

Dear Mama,

A distant cousin of Joseph's stopped by last evening. He was happy to meet us and brought supper with him from his family. Joseph and he are the same age and told stories about when they played together in the field during the long summer evenings. They were quite energetic boys who liked nothing more than swimming all day and running all through the olive groves. They are serious men now of course, but it was wonderful to have a glimpse of my husband as a boy. Cousin Abe brought his lute and they sang old songs well into the evening. Their voices blended so well and the music was wonderful. The baby seemed to love it all, rocking along the music.

Abe also brought some harder news that has been troubling us both every since. There are serious rumors about the governor wanting to find a new baby boy who might be a king. People are saying there is a bounty on the child's head. Of course, they could be reactive and idle gossip, but it is troubling. When people in power fear a baby, well, I just don't know what to think. I have been praying so much Mama, to know what to do and how to handle all this rising fear. Joseph has been very understanding but I can tell he is worried as well.

I am mending well, Mama, but the wise women do not want me to travel yet. I had a bit of a fever the other day and they hovered around me, making me drink juice and water, and taking care of the baby so I can rest. I am fine now and feeling stronger every day. Can't wait to come home to you!

Love,

Mary

Wisdom - Mary Letter Day 29

Wisdom freed from a nation of oppressors *
a holy people and a blameless race.
She entered the soul of a servant of the Lord, *
withstood dread rulers with wonders and signs.
To the saints she gave the reward of their labors, *
and led them by a marvelous way;
She was their shelter by day *
and a blaze of stars by night.
She brought them across the Red Sea, *
she led them through mighty waters;
But their enemies she swallowed in the waves *
and spewed them out
from the depths of the abyss.
And then, Lord, the righteous sang
 hymns to your Name, *
and praised with one voice your protecting hand;
For Wisdom opened the mouths of the mute, *
and gave speech to the tongues of a new-born people. Wisdom 10:15-19,20b-21

Dear Mama,

I know I am very young but I feel like I am gaining wisdom being a mother and surrounded by women who teach me so many things. I wish you were her to get to know them, as you would fit right in with them. They visit every day. Our hostess checks on me several times a day. They share stories and laugh, and take turns rocking and walking with the baby. I have learned that being a mother requires having a requires community and family. They have been that for me since I can't be with you and Papa. They teach me ways to calm this little one, and how to tell what his cries and noises might mean. I am so blessed by their wisdom.

The young shepherds stopped by again last night as there is a star over this place. It is bright and I have been told the astronomers call it a comet. I don't know what that means but they tell me they are very rare. It signifies an important event and person. The shepherds are convinced this little boy is meant to be a king. I think that may be trouble soon for us in this conflicted city. But the brave shepherds have pledged their loyalty and protection. So sweet, but they have no weapons except for a few sticks and slingshots. Their kindness is genuine and I am moved daily by the goodness of strangers. I have to believe that God has sent this people to encourage us daily.

Love,

Mary

Our Help - Mary Letter Day 28

1 If the Lord had not
been on our side, *
let Israel now say;
2 If the Lord had not
been on our side, *
when enemies rose up against us;
 3 Then would they
have swallowed us up alive *
in their fierce anger toward us;
4 Then would the waters have overwhelmed us *
and the torrent gone over us;
5 Then would the raging waters *
have gone right over us.
6 Blessed be the Lord! *
he has not given us over
to be a prey for their teeth.
7 We have escaped like a bird
from the snare of the fowler; *
the snare is broken, and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the Name of the Lord, *
the maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 124

Dear Mama,

This city is a place of anxiety and fears. Soldiers are all around and there have been rumors in the streets that trouble is coming. We don't know where from or to whom, but folks are suggesting that we be very cautious. Joseph finally has an appointment to finalize all of his paperwork. It took a good deal of wrangling and some money paid under the table as well. I did not expect this filthy and worried place and didn't expect so much corruption and outright manipulation. Joseph wants to get home right away, even though this is his family town. He doesn't feel safe here. We would be on our way today if not for the legal work. And, the wise women prohibit me from traveling until they feel I am healed enough to do so. They have really been very kind, but also, incredibly strict and sometimes outright bossy.

Our little boy is a wonder, Mama. He gurgles and smiles, reaching for us with his sweet arms. He is a ravenous eater, and I often am drained in a short time. He sleeps well, though, and wakes us loudly when he is hungry. I have been out several times with him during the past few days. Now, it seems, with all the turmoil on the streets, we must be more careful than before. We are considered strangers and therefore possible trouble. There are so many strangers, who have flooded the city because of the census, that the locals are edgy, distrustful and some are outright frightened. A little spark would cause great unrest. So we lay low, recite our psalms and prayers, and trust that God will preserve us. I have found comfort in the ancient words, "our help is in the Name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth."  Joseph often sings our baby to sleep with that old song, and I often doze off when he sings so sweetly. We have to trust God, Mama, since we have a precious treasure to protect. Pray for us and give our love to Papa.

Love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day 27 - Before the Mountains

The LORD created me
at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of long ago.
Ages ago I was set up, at the first,
before the beginning of the earth.
 When there were no depths
I was brought forth,
when there were no springs
abounding with water.
Before the mountains
had been shaped,
 before the hills,
I was brought forth
when he had not yet made
earth and fields,
or the world’s first bits of soil.
When he established the heavens,
 I was there,
when he drew a circle
on the face of the deep,
when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
then I was beside him, like a master worker;
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing before him always. Proverbs 8:22-30

Dear Mama,

I went for a walk yesterday in this strange city. Although we have been here several days the wise women did not want me to venture forth until I was healed up to their liking. I was getting stiff from sitting in this barn, which can be drafty and quite limited in space. So out we went, my little boy and I. He was bundled up and tied to me and we walked through the loud market and the dusty streets. Joseph went with us for a time, then headed off to the census office while I picked up some food for our dinner. At every stall, the shop keeper wanted to see the baby, often calling over other family members to look on this child. There is something wonderful and ancient about him. His eyes look on everyone with great delight. I didn't have a chance to purchase much for our dinner. Most of the vendors gave us food as gifts and several said they would deliver it in the afternoon.

We napped after our walk, both of us exhausted and ready to rest. My little baby curled in my arms, we slept for several hours until we were startled by loud shouting. I hopped up and found several shop boys with arms overloaded with fruit, vegetables and meats. Our hostess heard the racket and came running, thinking something awful was happening. When she saw the young boys laden with gifts, she couldn't help but laugh. I did too. We tried to give them some money but they refused. She gave them each some sweet cakes and then gathered up the meats so she could cook them. There is way to much for us alone, and I told her to keep s much as she needed.

There is something amazing about this child, Mama. Oh, yes, we did hear about him from angels, but I wasn't prepare at all for how people react to him. From the shepherds, our hosts to the shopkeepers, he touches them somehow. He is normal, healthy and full of life like all babies. Maybe all moms feel this way. I am tired but overjoyed with this little gift from God. I cannot wait to show him to you and have you hold him and help me raise him.

love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day 26

1 I will exalt you, O Lord,
because you have lifted me up *
and have not let my enemies triumph over me.
2 O Lord my God, I cried out to you, *
and you restored me to health.
 3 You brought me up,
O Lord, from the dead; *
you restored my life as I was
going down to the grave.
4 Sing to the Lord, you servants of his; *
give thanks for the remembrance
of his holiness.
5 For his wrath endures
but the twinkling of an eye, *
his favor for a lifetime.
6 Weeping may spend the night, *
but joy comes in the morning.
 7 While I felt secure, I said,
"I shall never be disturbed. *
You, Lord, with your favor,
made me as strong as the mountains."
8 Then you hid your face, *
and I was filled with fear.

 9 I cried to you, O Lord; *
I pleaded with the Lord, saying,
10 "What profit is there in my blood,
if I go down to the Pit? *
will the dust praise you or
declare your faithfulness?
11 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me; *
O Lord, be my helper."
12 You have turned my wailing into dancing; *
you have put off my sack-cloth
and clothed me with joy.
13 Therefore my heart sings
to you without ceasing; *
O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ever. Psalm 30

Dear Mama,

I am learning how challenging it is to be a mother as well as a wife. Fortunately, you have been a great example for me. The wise women have been checking on me every day, since they know my mother is far away. They have taught me how to clean and change him, how to help him get to sleep, and exercises to help my body return to normal. I'm not sure I will ever have my shape back, but they keep reassuring me that I will. Our hosts have been bringing us extra food from their table, so I don't have to think about food preparation. Everyone wants me to eat! I am so grateful for their kindnesses. Folks, who were strangers just days ago, have become like family. While Joseph is off waiting with so many others at the census office, they sit with me and take turn holding the baby.

Joseph is a wonderful father. He loved to walk the boy and sing to him whim bouncing on his shoulder. Joseph talks to him in a gentle voice, telling him the stories of our lives. He is always willing to change him and watch him when I need to rest. All of my fears before our marriage have faded away. He is kind and protective. He is also very smart, kind and patient. And now that he is a father, he laughs and sings all the time. The only thing that makes him grumpy is the paperwork and waiting he has had to deal with. We will be so glad when this is over and we can come home again!

Mary

Christmas Day 2021 - Mary Letter Day 25

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see-- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. Luke 2:1-20

Dear Mama,

He's here and he's perfect! I wrote to you when it was just starting and I was terrified. Now I can write and say how grateful I am for all you taught me. I kept you and Papa in mind throughout the ordeal. I recited the prayers and psalms you taught me, though sometimes I stumbled and made up some words. The pains were terrible and although I tried to be brave I did cry out now and then. The wise women and Judith were great help, and guided me each step of the way. Joseph wouldn't leave the area, even though the pain and my cries really bothered him. He was so brave. The women were amazed and told me their husbands never hung around! I am tired but so full of energy and joy. I don't want to sleep just watch this little miracle as he sleeps. The women promised to come and check on me regularly to make sure I am resting and healing.

His little toes and fingers are perfect. His face and dark hair are like an angels. His eyes are bright and he seems to focus on faces. I was so afraid and now I cannot imagine what I was afraid of, Mama. He warms my heart, even when he cries.

After all was done and I was washed up, the wise women left us. Judith and Samuel brought us food and gifts from the guests in the inn. They are so kind and generous. Late in the night, we were woken by sheep outside the stable. Joseph went to investigate and there were many shepherds, lead by a young boy, who came running in, wanting to see the baby. They told us that angels had appeared to them and told them to come and see. Amazing! They gave us blankets woven from their wool and thanked us for this great gift!

Mama, I don't know why I get afraid and doubt covers me. Their visit tells me that God is with us, even in the strangest of places, in the most awkward and painful of circumstances! I know you and Papa have been so worried. And, God is present and real at all times. I miss you both so much and can't wait for you to see this wonderful boy in person! It will be very soon.

Much love,

Mary

Emmanuel God with Us - Mary Letter Day 24 - Christmas Eve 2021

Dear Mama,

This will be a very brief letter. Despite all our plans and efforts, it seems as if the child is ready to be born. My pains began early this morning and Joseph didn't know what to do. They aren't too heavy and are still far enough apart I can write. The wise woman have been here and verified that he is ready to be born. They have gone out for a moment to collect their supplies. I don't really know what that means! Oh, Mama, why can't you be her with me! Why does everything have to be so challenging with us so far from home?

Our hosts have been so kind and now they are all excited about the baby to come. They tried to make some folks vacate a room for us but they wouldn't budge! I don't blame them. If we had somewhere other than a stable we would hold on for dear life. Joseph doesn't have an appointment yet with the census folks but refuses to leave me alone. The women tried to shoo him out but he said that he had orders from God! No one argued with him, although I think they thought he was crazy. We do seem crazy, Mama, giving birth to the promised Emmanuel, God with Us, in a stable surrounded by smelly sheep and cows, along with noisy chickens and other birds. There will certainly always be milk and eggs!

Mama, I'm scared. I have prayed as much as I can. I will try to be strong. I love you both so much and wish you were here.

Mary

God's Blessing - Mary Letter Day 23

Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God; you have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come. May this be instruction for the people, O Lord God! And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God! Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have wrought all this greatness, so that your servant may know it. Therefore you are great, O Lord God; for there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. Who is like your people, like Israel? Is there another nation on earth whose God went to redeem it as a people, and to make a name for himself, doing great and awesome things for them, by driving out before his people nations and their gods? And you established your people Israel for yourself to be your people forever; and you, O Lord, became their God. And now, O Lord God, as for the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, confirm it forever; do as you have promised. Thus your name will be magnified forever in the saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel’; and the house of your servant David will be established before you. For you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house’; therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant; now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you; for you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” 2 Samuel 7:18-29

Dear Mama,

This morning we both came into Bethlehem from Ruth's house. We couldn't stay there any longer as more of her family was arriving. All of the inns here are full to capacity, but Joseph was diligent yesterday and one kind person said they might have a place. Well, they did have a space, but not what we expected! They made us a private space in their stable, bringing a matress and sheets out to a clean area in one corner. They saw how big I was and realized I am close to term. They have hung some curtains for privacy and put up fences to keep the larger animals out of our space. I never expected this would be my lot. Joseph was very upset at first, wanting to find something better. The kind folks who own this inn made such and effort to make us comfortable, we couldn't remain upset. Here we are in a situation that we have no control over. Judith and Samuel have made a place for us and I am so tired that it seems like a royal suite.

Judith has gone to fetch one of the local wise women, as she thinks I am ready to deliver. I told her I was going back home to have this baby but she insisted. She said it couldn't hurt to have me checked out. She is being very sweet bringing me water and fruit while Joseph is once again at the census office trying to get an appointment. She sat with me for a while this morning and told me about all of her children and grandchildren. Mama, you would like her,

The city is filthy, crowded and so noisy. It is not at all like what I expected. There was so much pushing and shoving as we made our way here, I was sure that I would fall down. Joseph kept me close and got us here in one piece. It's nothing like home, Mama. But this little corner will have to do until Joseph gets through with the officials. The stable is build into the hill so we are somewhat shielded from the noise and smell of the city. Missing you both so much!

love,

Mary

Scattering the Proud - Mary Letter Day 22

In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.’ And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’ And Mary remained with her for about three months and then returned to her home. Luke 1:39-56

Dear Elizabeth,

I am dashing off a quick letter while waiting for Joseph to return. I am staying with Ruth while he runs into Bethlehem to the census office. Yesterday he went in and they told him he needed to make an appointment. When he tried to make an appointment yesterday they said they were all filled up until the end of the week. He tried yesterday to find us a place to stay and will do so today as well, as Ruth's place is overrun with people and it's too far for him to come and go easily.

I have thought about you so much in these past day and about your little boy John. He must be growing like a weed. I am so happy for you and Zechariah! To wait so long and finally be honored by God with a son. My child is a complete surprise and gift. I don't know if I am ready to be a mother, and, we both said yes to God and God is always surprising and using the least likely for great things. In my darkest moments I think of your songs and your joy when we were together. I wouldn't be so strong now, if I hadn't spent time with you. You faith and strength became mine as well. Pray for us, Auntie, as the challenges are great!

love,

Mary

Servant of the Lord - Mary Letter Day 21

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town
in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin
engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.’ Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her. Luke 1:26-38

Dear Mama,

We took our time descending the hills as I am very unstable these days and Joseph was afraid of me falling down. He mad me walk behind him with my hand on his shoulder, since I would have surely fallen riding the burro. He is very surefooted but likes to rock back and forth and is prone to toss something (or me) off, if he's feeling uncomfortable and ornery.  It took a long time and we were very weary. We are now on the outskirts of town with just  few miles to go. We are staying with your sister Ruth, who has been very kind. The house is overrun with people, Mama, all trying to get to be registered. It's an overcrowded barn here! And so noisy!

Ruth wanted to know all about me and Joseph. I tried to hedge around the story of the angel visitation, but she insisted. I guess you had confided in her before you sent us here. She wanted both our stories told with all the details! Your sister is quite a character! I remember her when I was little but now, I can see her as an adult. She talks a mile a minute, cooks and cleans constantly and never seems to tire. She sure wanted to sit a listen to us for a while though. She made everyone go outside and so chores so she could hear us completely and thoroughly.

I told her the story of the angel's visit and how terrified I have been. She teared up at one point and took my hands. She told me she believed me because she too had a dream. It was vague but she saw the world was changing for good and that a young woman would birth this change. She looked in my eyes and said, "that's you, Mary, that's you!' I got goosebumps, Mama. I needed this confirmation today, as my faith has been lagging. I'm so tired and can't wait to be back home.

Please pray for us and send Papa my love,

love always,

Mary

Sing Aloud - Mary Letter Day 20

Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
 O daughter Jerusalem!
The LORD has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies.
The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst;
you shall fear disaster no more.
On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak.
The LORD, your God, is in your midst,
a warrior who gives victory;
he will rejoice over you with gladness,
he will renew you in his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival.
I will remove disaster from you,
so that you will not bear reproach for it.
I will deal with all your oppressors at that time.
And I will save the lame and gather the outcast,
and I will change their shame into praise
and renown in all the earth.
At that time I will bring you home,
at the time when I gather you;
for I will make you renowned and praised
among all the peoples of the earth,
when I restore your fortunes
before your eyes, says the LORD. Zephaniah 3:14-20

Dear Mama,

We are edging ever closer to Bethlehem and are staying in the hills well outside the city today. This area is dotted with sheep and their are may sheep camps and shepherds around us. As we were walking in the cool of the evening, we heard a small voice singing with great gusto and clarity. The words she sang were prophet's words. Joseph believes they are Zephaniah's words. "Sing aloud O daughter of Zion". The chorus repeated over and over, so we followed the music and finally found a little girl singing to a tiny lamb. She stopped singing and smiled at us. Her father came over and introduced himself and invited us to warm ourselves by the fire. What a gift true hospitality is, and how lovely it was to rest a while there. They told us the stories of these hills and their people. The moon shone brightly above us and we felt safe and warm. We fell asleep as the sun was rising and woke again later to the little girl singing. They insisted we share their breakfast which was hearty and filling and we started on our way again.

Mama, I am moving quite slowly these past few days. The baby has quieted down for the most part, although I can feel the movement and hiccupping still. I feel like I have to waddle to walk. The wise woman told me that these would be signs of the child being ready to appear. I hope it isn't too soon and we can make it home again before my delivery time. Joseph has me ride on the burro as much as possible. We make better time when I ride but Joseph isn't critical of my slow pace. He has been so kind and supportive. He had the little girl teach us her song, and now he sings it to me as we travel on.

Much love,

Mary

Fourth Sunday of Advent - Mary Letter Day 19

Fourth Sunday of Advent - December 19, 2021

The Collect
Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

 Old Testament Micah 5:2-5a

You, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me
one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin
is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore
he shall give them up until the time when
she who is in labor has brought forth;
then the rest of his kindred shall return
to the people of Israel. And he shall stand
and feed his flock in the strength of the LORD,
in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.
And they shall live secure, for now he shall
be great to the ends of the earth;
and he shall be the one of peace.

 Psalm 80:1-7

1 Hear, O Shepherd of Israel,
leading Joseph like a flock; *
shine forth, you that are enthroned
 upon the cherubim.
2 In the presence of Ephraim,
Benjamin, and Manasseh, *
stir up your strength
and come to help us.
3 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance,
and we shall be saved.
 4 O LORD God of hosts, *
how long will you be angered
despite the prayers of your people?
 5 You have fed them
with the bread of tears; *
you have given them bowls
of tears to drink.
 6 You have made us
the derision of our neighbors, *
and our enemies laugh us to scorn.
7 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance,
and we shall be saved.

 The New Testament Hebrews 10:5-10

When Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, 'See, God, I have come to do your will, O God' (in the scroll of the book it is written of me)." When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law), then he added, "See, I have come to do your will." He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

The Gospel Luke 1:39-55

In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord." And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."

Dear Mama,

We are safely on the road and being spoiled by cousin Miriam. She may be ancient but she is strong and vital. We have been so well fed- she's an amazing cook. We stayed two days with her and will be heading out at night fall, as we have delayed too much already. We had a rough go the first night and Joseph got a little banged up from a fall, but he is fine now. Miriam has pampered him so very much. Her family is large, and they are always cooking and eating, laughing and talking. These strangers to me quickly became family.

We are going to have cover a good deal of distance tonight as we are behind schedule. Fortunately, the moon is nearly full and the weather is favorable. We should have an easier time of it tonight. I was so very frightened, Mama, that first night. I let the fear roll over me instead of my faith. Miriam reminded me that God is going with us! I also remembered that song that Elizabeth and I sang when I was with her. "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant."  I will sing it all along the rest of the way. It will probably drive Joseph crazy but I am sure he would rather have me singing that cowering in fear. By the way, when I was so scared the other night, he had us repeat psalms over and over until we could be calm and sleep. I am discovering what a treasure he is! Mama, I am truly blessed.

Pray for us, please. We will try hard to rush back as soon as we finish in Bethlehem. I so want to be safe at home with you and Papa when the baby is born!

Love,

Mary

Save Me - Mary Letter Day 18

1 Save me, O God, by your Name; *
in your might, defend my cause.
2 Hear my prayer, O God; *
give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For the arrogant have risen up against me,
and the ruthless have sought my life, *
those who have no regard for God.
4 Behold, God is my helper; *
it is the Lord who sustains my life.
5 Render evil to those who spy on me; *
in your faithfulness, destroy them.
6 I will offer you a freewill sacrifice *
and praise your Name,
O LORD, for it is good.
7 For you have rescued me
from every trouble, *
and my eye has seen
the ruin of my foes. Psalm 54

Dear Elizabeth,

I am writing to you as I don't want to scare Mama and Papa. I hope this letter gets to you safely, and that we can find our way safely to Bethlehem. We started out last night after the sun had set. Mama cried a good deal and I did too. The road was very dark and stony, so we had to go very slowly. Just at the outskirts of town we felt that we were being followed. I have never been so scared in my life! Joseph found a small cave, had me dismount and hide in it. Men from our town came up to him, yelling and screaming. They wanted to know where I was but Joseph would not tell them. I could hear it all and was shaking the whole time. They roughed him up a little bit and then finally left. He came into the cave and we huddled there all night. He had me repeat Psalm 54 with him, over and over, in the dark until sleep finally came. This morning, when the sun came up, I saw he was bruised and bloodied. How brave he is! I used a cloth to clean him up and we ate a breakfast of dates and nuts. We left then and went on to the house of his cousin, who was so terrified. She had been waiting up all night. When we didn't arrive, she sent her sons out to find us and they came back empty handed.

Miriam is beautiful, despite her age and deep wrinkles. She made us a soft bed and wants us to stay several days. She believes the terror of last night needs healing time. Joseph is anxious to get back on the road tonight, but he agreed to stay over. He is bruised and sore, so rest will do him good. She is feeding us like we are royalty and won't let me help at all. She has sons and daughter-in-laws who help out, but she, in her great age, is still vibrant and strong. I hope I grow to be a little like her some day.

Tomorrow I will write to Mama. I am still a bit shaken and upset and don't want her to worry. Pray for us as this journey already seems like a very rough and winding road.

love,

Mary

The Lord Stands Fast - Mary Day 17

Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous; *
it is good for the just to sing praises.
2 Praise the Lord with the harp; *
play to him upon the psaltery and lyre.
3 Sing for him a new song; *
sound a fanfare with all
your skill upon the trumpet.
4 For the word of the Lord is right, *
and all his works are sure.
5 He loves righteousness
and justice; *
the loving-kindness of the Lord
fills the whole earth.
6 By the word of the Lord
were the heavens made, *
by the breath of his mouth
all the heavenly hosts.
7 He gathers up the waters
of the ocean as in a water-skin *
and stores up the depths of the sea.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord; *
let all who dwell in the world
stand in awe of him.
9 For he spoke, and it came to pass; *
he commanded, and it stood fast.
10 The Lord brings the will
of the nations to naught; *
he thwarts the designs of the peoples.
11 But the Lord's will stands fast for ever, *
and the designs of his heart from age to age.
12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord! *
happy the people he has chosen to be his own!
13 The Lord looks down from heaven, *
and beholds all the people in the world.
14 From where he sits enthroned
he turns his gaze *
on all who dwell on the earth.
15 He fashions all the hearts of them *
and understands all their works.
16 There is no king that can be
saved by a mighty army; *
a strong man is not delivered
by his great strength.
17 The horse is a vain hope for deliverance; *
for all its strength it cannot save.
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord
is upon those who fear him, *
on those who wait upon his love,
19 To pluck their lives from death, *
and to feed them in time of famine.
20 Our soul waits for the Lord; *
he is our help and our shield.
21 Indeed, our heart rejoices in him, *
for in his holy Name we put our trust.
 22 Let your loving-kindness,
O Lord, be upon us, *
as we have put our trust in you. Psalm 33

Dear Elizabeth,

This is my last letter to you for some time. We leave tonight once it is dark and will go a few miles to stay with a distant cousin of Joseph. She is quite elderly but Joseph says she has been kind to him all of his life and she has a big house. I hope she likes me. Some older women are very protective of their sons and nephews and very judgmental of the women they marry. As I write, Papa and Joseph are packing the last items and Mama is making us an early dinner. Elizabeth, I am so scared. I have never been away from home without Mama and Papa. And I am so close to delivering this child.

The wise woman came last night and examine me early this morning. Mama was with me and held my hand. I was still so nervous, that Mama taught me to breath until I calmed down. And then she whispered some psalms as the examination went forward. I was able to join her in the words and it did help me be somewhat calmer. The wise woman did say that I was only a few weeks away from delivery and that the baby was a good size and very healthy. That made me cry - I am so happy and so terrified at the same time. I so want to be back here with Mama when I give birth. I hope our trip to Bethlehem goes as planned and we can rush back before labor begins. I need Mama to breathe with me. I need her now more than ever. Pray for us, that the trip is quick and we can return home in time.

Love,

Mary

Comfort in Trouble - Mary Letter Day 16

49 Remember your word to your servant, *
because you have given me hope.
50 This is my comfort in my trouble, *
that your promise gives me life.
51 The proud have derided me cruelly, *
but I have not turned from your law.
52 When I remember your judgments of old, *
O LORD, I take great comfort.
53 I am filled with a burning rage, *
because of the wicked who forsake your law.
54 Your statutes have been like songs to me *
wherever I have lived as a stranger.
55 I remember your name in the night, O LORD, *
and dwell upon your law.
56 This is how it has been with me, *
because I have kept your commandments.
Psalm 119:49-72

Dear Elizabeth,

I heard the wonderful news that your little one has been born and he is strong and healthy! And you are well too I understand. I am so happy for all of you and delighted that your husband regained his voice. God is good at all times! What a comfort this news has been to me, as life here is challenging every day.
The final stages of packing are going on furiously. The normal calm in this household is completely shattered. Mama, Papa and Joseph won't let me do anything. I feel a bit helpless and useless as they all scurry around packing and cooking and making final arrangements. Mama has arranged for one last visit from the wise woman. She is on her way now but she lives a good distance away. One more embarrassing examination to make sure the baby and I are all right. I know this baby is all right! It feels like there is a game going on in my belly with all the constant kicking and elbowing. Yet I am anxious and excited to meet the little one.

Your life must be very different and very full right now. I hope you will write to me and tell me about everything. I wish I could visit one last time but Papa says the authorities are already angry that Joseph hasn't left already for Bethlehem. They were by here the other day, asking questions and generally being obnoxious. We will leave in the next night or two. After that it is a big question as to how far we will get and how long it will take us. The route the men have planned is back roads and sheep paths, away from any crowds. They are still very worried for my safety.

Sending so much love to you and your "boys",

Mary

He is Near - Mary Letter Day 15

‘From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. ‘But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Matthew 24:32-44

Dear Elizabeth,

This little one is really kicking and moving. I sometimes think I see a little tiny foot pushing against my belly and feel hiccups all the time. There is no question that life is present, and that my time is drawing near. I am so gigantic and have lost my balance completely. I have to hold on to chairs and walls when I walk along even inside. Mama and Papa laugh at me sometimes and I even get tickled with myself. I know this little child is already in charge, because I am not.

Our travel preparations are almost done, except for finding suitable lodging with family. Some have been very slow to respond and others, particularly Joseph's family have already departed for the city.
I have never been on such a journey, let alone heavy with child, Mama is very worried and sad, because she really wants to be with me all the way. Papa keeps telling her that I will be back before the child arrives. I think he is saying that for her comfort, and mine. I wish I could pack them up and take them with us. But we can't afford to do that, and they are reluctant to leave home. Joseph has been so good about organizing and keeping his composure. When I start fretting he just puts his arm around me, and sits me down. He doesn't have to say much to restore my calm.

love,

Mary

Comfort in Zion - Mary Letter Day 14

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo; and Zechariah said, In the night I saw a man riding on a red horse! He was standing among the myrtle trees in the glen; and behind him were red, sorrel, and white horses. Then I said, “What are these, my lord?” The angel who talked with me said to me, “I will show you what they are.” So the man who was standing among the myrtle trees answered, “They are those whom the LORD has sent to patrol the earth.” Then they spoke to the angel of the LORD who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have patrolled the earth, and lo, the whole earth remains at peace.” Then the angel of the LORD said, “O LORD of hosts, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which you have been angry these seventy years?” Then the LORD replied with gracious and comforting words to the angel who talked with me. So the angel who talked with me said to me, Proclaim this message: Thus says the LORD of hosts; I am very jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion. And I am extremely angry with the nations that are at ease; for while I was only a little angry, they made the disaster worse. Therefore, thus says the LORD, I have returned to Jerusalem with compassion; my house shall be built in it, says the LORD of hosts, and the measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem. Proclaim further: Thus says the LORD of hosts: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity; the LORD will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem. Zechariah 1:7-17

Dear Elizabeth,

We have had some exciting days of late. Joseph is living in our house all the time and there has been much back and forth about the authorities. The men talk about the hardships of living in occupied territory and the demands this foreign government makes on our people. This has been our home for countless generations and yet we have no say over it. Joseph and Papa have gone to the government offices several times to plead our case, but the local Roman man will not hear our case. He finally told Joseph that if we did not go to Bethlehem very soon, we could both be put into jail. He didn't care that I was with child and told Joseph that he should have kept his hands off me! Papa and Joseph came back home so angry and so broken. I reminded them, when they finally calmed down, that the Creator had sent this child, and the Creator will certainly keep us safe. I couldn't believe I said that because I don't feel that confident!

Anyway, we are making hasty preparations. Papa has found us a burro who can carry me and supplies as we go. Making is crazy in the kitchen, cooking breads and cakes and drying fruits and meats. Papa has also been reaching out to distant family and friends to ask for them to accommodate us along the road. Our family in Bethlehem have no room but they assured us that there are plenty of inns in town. Joseph has set aside money for that, and he and Papa are pouring over maps to find a good route that is not main highways. They both fear reprisal from local folks, so we will mostly travel at night.

I pray for you comfort and safety in your last days before delivery. And, I ask you for your prayers for my peace as well. God is doing a new thing with us, I know. Yet carrying the new work of the Creator is tremendously challenging! We will continue to be comfort and support to one another.

Much love,

Mary

Third Sunday of Advent - Mary Letter Day 13

Third Sunday of Advent

The Collect
Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

 Old Testament Zephaniah 3:14-20

Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the LORD.

 Canticle Isaiah 12:2-6

Surely, it is God who saves me; *
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold
and my sure defense, *
and he will be my Savior.
 Therefore you shall
draw water with rejoicing *
from the springs of salvation.
And on that day you shall say, *
Give thanks to the Lord
and call upon his Name;
 Make his deeds known
among the peoples; *
see that they remember that
his Name is exalted.
Sing the praises of the Lord,
for he has done great things, *
and this is known in all the world.
 Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion,
ring out your joy, *
for the great one in the midst of you
is the Holy One of Israel.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

 The New Testament Philippians 4:4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

 The Gospel Luke 3:7-18

John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages." As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people.

Dear Elizabeth,

Well, I am a married woman! It was a sweet ceremony despite the drastic limitations due to the circumstances. Mama and Papa cried, as did I. Joseph smiled throughout and teared up as well. There was quiet toasting and wonderful foods that Mama had prepared. I thought I would be sad for the lack of a big party, but actually, it was the best. A holy moment, quiet and yet very powerful.

For now Joseph will live here with us, at least, until the baby is born. The wise woman, our cousin, says it will be sooner than we had thought. We hope to delay our trip to Bethlehem until after the child appears, anyway. What the authorities say is a whole different thing, Papa and Joseph had gone to their offices to plead our case. Joseph is sleeping in my room on a palette, as he doesn't want to hurt me or the baby in the precarious time. Joseph has proven to be the kindest of men. He lies next to me at night and tells me stories, occasionally singing as well. He is so gentle and yet I feel his deep strength. He has made me feel safe in these strange and dangerous times. I now look forward to the time we can be fully husband and wife, and I am not afraid now.

The future is uncertain, surely, but right now, I take great comfort in my husband and family. And I am so grateful to God for surrounding me with this peace in such a time as this. My prayers as with you as it must soon be your time to be delivered.

Love,

Mary

God's Promise -Mary Letter Day 12

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; *
call upon him when he draws near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways *
and the evil ones their thoughts;
And let them turn to the Lord,
and he will have compassion, *
and to our God, for he will richly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, *
nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, *
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
For as rain and snow fall from the heavens *
and return not again, but water the earth,
Bringing forth life and giving growth, *
seed for sowing and bread for eating,
So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; *
it will not return to me empty;
But it will accomplish that which I have purposed, *
and prosper in that for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:6-11

Dear Auntie,

Well, tomorrow is our wedding day, although there will be no celebration or anything. Mama is making special food for our small family, but that is all. I imagined it very differently. I know that I am being foolish, but I did imagine my friends surrounding me, and musicians and dancing. Now there will be none of that, just us and as quiet as humanly possible. We have had a few incidents and threats and Papa is keeping me housebound for my safety.

Yesterday, Miriam, a distant relative came for a visit. I didn't realize at first why she was here. Miriam is very old, and has spent her life tending to pregnant women. She has delivered hundreds of babies I am told. Mama wanted her to examine me and examine me she did! I was so embarrassed! Yet, Miriam was so gentle and soft spoken. She didn't treat me like I was a fool, but rather explained everything she was doing. She also listened to my story and was delighted. She is one of the first people to really believe. Me. Afterwards, she showed me how to care for my belly, how to rub my skin with healing oils and how to care for myself after the birth. At first, I was terrified, but afterwards, I was truly grateful. As awkward as it was, I felt I now have some idea what is before me. I am not sure I am ready for it, but I think I know what to expect, at least.

God called me and made and promise to me, Elizabeth. Despite the times I get discouraged and the tears flow, I know that God is with us. I can feel it. And Joseph has proven to be a steady, faithful partner. He is scared, like me, and yet want to do God's will. Pray for us as we are married tomorrow!

Woe - Mary Letter Day 11

Jesus said, “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath.’ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath.’ How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? So whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it; and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean.” Matthew 23:13-26

Dear Auntie,

Two nights ago, while we were all getting ready for bed, a rock came flying through our front window. After he told us to hide, Papa went running out the front door to see who had thrown it but all he could see was a shadow running away, and he heard the rustle of the trees they brushed against. We had been cowering inside. When Papa came back he picked up the rock and noticed something was tied to it. He removed the string and found a note threatening my life. I was to leave or be punished for my sin. Papa sent for Joseph and they sat up late talking and planning.

This morning they told us that preparations are being made for us to leave much sooner than originally planned. We are to travel by night to keep us safe and we will take back roads and stay with family only. Our wedding will be this week, after the Sabbath, and with no celebration of family at all. Just the four of us and the Rabbi, Jacob, Papa's cousin.

Why do our religious leaders doubt God and hate Yahweh's servants? Why do they need to punish and destroy the good in this world? I am no trouble for them, yet they would destroy me and my child. They are shunning Joseph and Papa as well. Mama and I wept a good deal today, and probably will as we prepare for our travels. She has been rushing around, baking, sewing and working to provide everything we might need for the trip. She wishes she could go with us but it would only put her in danger as well. I pray night and day, and ask our God to provide us safe passage and to send angels to guard Mama and Papa. Pray for me, and for us, please.

Love,

Mary

Humble - Mary Letter Day 10

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the market-places, and to have people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father—the one in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. Matthew 23:1-12

Dear Elizabeth,

The only source of comfort I have these days is prayer. I try to slip out into the garden after dark, or very early in the morning, and speak my heart to God. I can feel that the Lord is listening, standing beside me, holding me up in the face of all these challenges.

One of my girl friends stopped by last night. i thought she was coming to support me but instead shared all the nasty gossip and told me what she thought of me. It was so ugly. I held back my tears until she left. Then I rushed out into the garden weeping and praying. At the end I wrote this prayer which I am committed to praying every day. I hope you will pray it with me. You have been so strong for me, so loving and kind. Thank you for the unconditional love you have shown me. There's not much of that here right now.

Loving Creator, draw near to your daughter
I am committed to following your ways
to be humble, loving and forgiving always
and yet it is so very hard these days and in this place.

My tears come quickly and unwelcomed
the stings and criticisms are everywhere
my body tells a story of shame and sin
yet you have called me and honored me.

You promised that I would bear the Savior
that I would be the carrier of your love
you gave me this life to nurture and tend
and I have promised to say yes to you always.

Lord, Help me to be humble in these times
wipe away my anger and help me to forgive
let me be your servant when others misunderstand
and help me to bring your love to the world. Amen.

love,

Mary
