Mary Letter Day Twenty

On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. On that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that is left of his people, from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Ethiopia, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea. He will raise a signal for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. Isaiah 11:10-12

Dear Mama,

We are getting so close to Bethlehem and should be there tomorrow! That means that Joseph can take care of business and we can turn right around and come home! I am so big and so ready to be home and have this baby. I have been very careful to follow all your instructions about my self care, including oiling my tummy so there are few skin stretch marks, drinking plenty of water and resting often. My tummy grows larger every day! It must be very crowded in there and it feels like the baby has been sitting very low down these past few days.

Joseph's cousins Martha and Ezra cared for us when we arrived late last night. They insisted we have some tea and food before they put us to bed. They sat up with us listening to our stories about our journey. Martha was very upset when Joseph told them about how cruel our towns people were to us, and to both of you. They are such faithful people, Mama. They said that we did the right thing to listen to God's voice and direction in our dreams.

This morning when we woke, it was getting close to noon and the sun was very warm. After a very big breakfast, Martha suggested that I have a full bath which she could help me with. Ezra and Joseph went to care for the donkey an restock our dwindling food supplies so we could have some privacy. Martha also wanted to make sure everything was fine with the baby and me, of course. She has studied with the local side women and knows what to look for. The bath was wonderful. She soaped me down and clean me off and then rubbed my skin with fragrant oils. It was heavenly! I didn't realize how much I needed that. She also told me the baby was coming very soon at which point I started to cry. I want to be home with you! Martha told me that I was in God's good hands, and so were Jospeh and the baby. We will have what we need when the time come, she said. I hope and pray she is right, although I am deterined to be back home with you!

Much love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Nineteen

A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. Isaiah 11:1-9

Dear Mama,

we had some delays at first, but our trip is going very well, albeit slowly. We are trying to avoid the busiest routes and follow the map that Papa and Joseph worked out before we left. This route is fairly hilly, and I am so big, my progress is slower than I want. I usually walk alongside the donkey or follow in his footsteps if the paths are very narrow. I had a spill the other day and am still a bit reluctant to ride. It wasn't the animal's fault.

A lovely encounter happened last night. Less than an hour after we set out, we came across some young shepherds caring for their family's sheep. They were sitting by a fire, having their supper when we came by. They got up and came to us with smiles on their faces.  They invited us to sit by the fire and visit with them. We couldn't resist their welcome. They gave us each a mug of hot sweet tea and were so curious about us. The youngest sat by me and leaned close. He couldn't have been more than seven or eight. He smiled at me and told me the child I was carrying was very important, very special. They told us about their lives, their families and sang some songs for us. We were careful not to tell them too much about ourselves. We do have to be very careful. It was a moment of grace and peace in the midst of hard scrabble travel.

It won't be long now before we get to Bethlehem. Once Joseph gets his paperwork filed, we can hurry home to you both. The dried fruit and meats you sent with us have really sustained us along our journey. We have been blessed with mostly quiet at night as we travel and family that welcomes us. We will travel home by daylight and main roads, at least for the first day of the journey. That will make our return much faster than our going.

Mama, Joseph has been so kind and gentle throughout this trip. I am so blessed to have him as my husband. He doesn't get angry with me for being so slow, and insists we stop regularly for a few minutes rest. When I can't sleep at night he recites from the psalms, and they calm my heart. I think you and Papa must understand this kind of love.

Love,

Mary

Advent Four - Mary Letter Day Eighteen

Advent Four Mary Letter Day 18

The Collect
Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Old Testament Isaiah 7:10-16

Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test. Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.”

Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18
1 Hear, O Shepherd of Israel,
leading Joseph like a flock; *
shine forth, you that are
enthroned upon the cherubim.
2 In the presence of Ephraim,
Benjamin, and Manasseh, *
stir up your strength
and come to help us.
3 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance,
 and we shall be saved.
4 O LORD God of hosts, *
how long will you be angered
despite the prayers of your people?
5 You have fed them
with the bread of tears; *
you have given them
bowls of tears to drink.
6 You have made us the
derision of our neighbors, *
and our enemies laugh us to scorn.
7 Restore us, O God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance,
and we shall be saved.
16 Let your hand be upon the
man of your right hand, *
the son of man you have
made so strong for yourself.
17 And so will we never
turn away from you; *
give us life, that we may
call upon your Name.
18 Restore us, O LORD God of hosts; *
show the light of your countenance,
 and we shall be saved.

Romans 1:1-7
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gospel Matthew 1:18-25

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Dear Auntie,

I wrote to Mama and Papa yesterday to tell them our trip was going so well. It was not really the truth, but I didn't want to upset them. We were to go as far as Cousin Ruth's house the first night, which is where we still are. I have quite a scary tale to tell. As we were leaving town, the moon was full, and some men followed us as we traveled. Joseph tried to keep well ahead of the, but they surrounded us and called us terrible names. Joseph didn't respond to them in any way, knowing that would only make them bolder. After a while they told us never to return! One of the men, whipped the donkey I was riding on and made the animal bolt. I couldn't calm him down, held on as best I could, and was thrown off. I landed in soft brush by the roadside. We could hear the men laughing and jeering as they rode away. I sat and cried. Joseph came and held me and we sat by the side of the road for a long time.

Fortunately, Samuel came to look for us since we didn't show up when we were supposed to. Ruth was very upset and sent him after us. Samuel put me on his animal and walked beside me to their home while Joseph tended to our upset beast and walked along here. We will be on our way tonight, but I wanted you to know the truth in case something happens. Samuel will go with us tonight, until we get well away from their home, and he is sure we are safe.

Ruth insisted that I was checked by the wise women in her town. They looked me over thoroughly (how embarrassing!) and said I was fine to continue the journey. One of them thought I was close to term and told me to watch out for labor pains as they may come on suddenly. I assured her that I would be home with Mama before the baby came due.

Please pray for us. We are so willing to follow God's call in our lives and nothing can change that. It would be nice if the road ahead were easier and gentler than it has been. Nothing though, can stop us from carrying the child, this gift to the whole world and keeping him safe.

Much love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Sixteen

1 I waited patiently upon the LORD; *
you stooped to me and heard my cry.
2 You lifted me out of the desolate pit,
out of the mire and clay; *
you set my feet upon a high cliff
and made my footing sure.
3 You put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God; *
many shall see, and stand in awe,
and put their trust in the LORD.
4 Happy are they who trust in the LORD! *
they do not resort to evil spirits
or turn to false gods.
5 Great things are they that you
have done, O LORD my God!
how great your wonders
and your plans for us! *
there is none who can
 be compared with you.
6 Oh, that I could make them
 known and tell them! *
but they are more than I can count.
7 In sacrifice and offering
you take no pleasure *
 (you have given me ears to hear you);
8 Burnt-offering and sin-offering
you have not required, *
and so I said, “Behold, I come.
9 In the roll of the book
it is written concerning me: *
‘I love to do your will, O my God;
your law is deep in my heart.'”
10 I proclaimed righteousness
in the great congregation; *
behold, I did not restrain my lips;
and that, O LORD, you know.
11 Your righteousness have I not
hidden in my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness
 and your deliverance; *
I have not concealed your love and
faithfulness from the great congregation. Psalm 40

Dear Auntie Elizabeth,

This will be my last letter from home. We will set out at sunset and travel a few miles tonight, so we are out of range of local detractors. We have a cousin, Ruth, who will welcome us to her home. Mama says she is quite old, so I hope we don't disturb her too much. Her son Samuel lives with her and will provide us support and help for our journey. A few days ago, I was quite afraid for this journey. Now, I am both peaceful and excited. I have come to realize that the judgement of humans is always shallow, while God's call is deep, persistent and reliable. Joseph and Papa have been thorough in their planning, so I think we will travel well. Mama has had a few tears and once she starts, I can't help but cry too. I will miss her so much!

We had our visit from the wise women who checked me out thoroughly! Yikes, the poked and listened just about everywhere. I was so embarrassed! They pronounced that I was in fine shape for travel and that the baby was growing big and strong. They also gave me advice as to regular rest time on our journey and wat to watch out for and when to get help. I don't plan to have this baby anywhere but here at home! I am grateful for their advice and wisdom. It makes me feel like everything is going to be all right.

We are having a big meal at noon day, and then Mama insists we take a rest, so we are ready for our journey. I am surely to excited to sleep but I will follow her instruction. She is so worried about me, so being in charge of our last hours helps her in some way. We will also have night prayers before we take to the road. Please pray for me and Joseph, and for Mama and Papa staying behind. I am sure they will worry until they see us returning.

Much love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Fifteen

1 The LORD, the God of gods, has spoken; *
and has called the earth from
the rising of the sun to its setting.
2 Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, *
God shines forth in glory.
3 Our God will come and
will not keep silence; *
before God there is a consuming flame,
and round about a raging storm.
4 God calls the heavens
and the earth from above *
to witness the judgment
of the chosen people.
5 Gather before me my loyal followers, *
those who have made a covenant
with me and sealed it with sacrifice.”
6 Let the heavens declare
the rightness of God’s cause; *
for it is God who is judge. Psalm 50:1-6

Dear Auntie Elizabeth,

The plans for travel are getting very intense with Mama cooking like crazy and Papa and Joseph making secret arrangements with family and friends on our route. Joseph purchased a donkey from a neighbor because the men both felt I might need to ride in my condition. Also, the animal can carry supplies as we travel, freeing up both of us for our journey. This will be the first time traveling with Jospeh as a married woman! And it will be my first ever trip to Bethlehem!

Mama and I ventured out to the river early in the morning yesterday. We knew a spot that we would have privacy and where no one would bother us. We took our breakfast and said our prayers as the world came to life around us. We did some final washing of my travel clothes and a few baby items. Mama and I know I will be home before anything happens, but we want to be safe and prepared for everything. We didn't say much but the words we did say were tender and understanding. Mama is so worried for me, yet she is treating me like an adult and respecting my wishes. I am so blessed by her and hate to leave without her.

Tomorrow the wise women come to inspect me for the journey. Mama found them from a cousin many miles away. They will arrive tonight and examine me in the morning so they can get back on the road. I am both fearful and excited all the time, Elizabeth. I had no idea my life would be like this! As always, pray for me and my family.

Much love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Fourteen

65 O LORD, you have dealt
graciously with your servant, *
according to your word.
66 Teach me discernment
and knowledge, *
for I have believed
in your commandments.
67 Before I was
afflicted I went astray, *
but now I keep your word.
68 You are good and
you bring forth good; *
instruct me in your statutes.
69 The proud have
smeared me with lies, *
but I will keep your
commandments with
my whole heart.
70 Their heart is gross and fat, *
but my delight is in your law.
71 It is good for me that
I have been afflicted, *
that I might learn your statutes.
72 The law of your mouth is dearer to me *
than thousands in gold and silver. Psalm 119: 65-72

Dear Auntie,

It seems there's never a dull moment in my world. Just few months ago I was a bored teenager, complaining about my parents. Now I am a married woman, growing bigger by the day, and the center of controversy in our village. It seems it's not enough for folks that we are legally married, but they cling to some laws that says we need to be punished. Some men came by last evening and spoke angrily with Papa and Jospeh. They finally went away, and we were able to have our supper, but both Papa and Joseph were visibly shaken. Then in the middle of the night, rocks were thrown at our house. We were all awakened, and found nasty notes tied to the rocks. It was hard to sleep after that. Mama was really shaken by it all.

It seems that saying yes to God had consequences I couldn't have anticipated. Why people feel attacking others is ever a god idea, I will never know. All of our plans for travel to Bethlehem now have to move more quickly. Papa and Jospeh are pouring over maps and making plans. Mama has made arrangements for the wise women to come and check me out. Our local wise women refused, so she has to reach out to cousins in another village for help. She wants to make sure it is safe for me to travel.

Elizabeth, we could really use your prayers. I love God and do not doubt that this is a wonderful gift for the world. Yet, this has caused my parents and Jospeh such pain. I am so hurt by what folks who used to be good friends are doing and saying.

much love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Thirteen

But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. Isaiah 9:1-7

Dear Auntie Elizabeth,

Well, today I am a married woman! Your Rabbi Jacob arrived the other evening and we had a nice time to visit while the guests gathered. It was only very close family and friends. The ceremony happened in the garden at dusk and the stars shone bright as we finally got to our vows. I was so nervous. Mama had made me a beautiful gown, adorned with ribbons and very flowing. She piled my hair on top of my head and wrapped my hair in ribbons as well. Jospeh looked so handsome and at least as nervous as I was. We came inside afterwards and feasted. Papa thought it best not to draw attention by being loud outside. It was a great moment which I will never forget. Rabbi Jacob read words from the prophet Isaiah, and we felt as if we were doing a very holy thing.

Joseph is now living here with us, sleeping in my room. We decided some time back to hold off on intimacy until after this baby is born. Besides, I'm very nervous and awkward. Joseph is so gentle and careful of my comfort and my feelings. We laugh a lot, and he tells me silly stories from his childhood.
He loves watching my belly when the baby is kicking and puts his head next to me and listens close.

The plans for the trip to Bethlehem are underway. Papa feels the threats from our so-called neighbors are real, so we will do our initial traveling at night. He is trying to set up a network of family and friends who will keep us safe and Jospeh is working closely with him. Mama and I are drying fruits for the journey.

Much love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Twelve

1 Happy are they who
consider the poor and needy! *
the LORD will deliver them
in the time of trouble.
2 The LORD preserves them
and keeps them alive, so that
they may be happy in the land; *
the LORD does not hand them
over to the will of their enemies.
3 The LORD sustains
 them on their sickbed *
and ministers to them in their illness.
4 I said, “LORD, be merciful to me; *
heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
5 My enemies are saying
wicked things about me: *
asking when I will die,
and when my name will perish.
6 Even if they come to see me,
they speak empty words; *
their heart collects false rumors;
they go outside and spread them.
7 All my enemies whisper
together about me *
and devise evil against me.
8 They say a deadly thing
 has fastened on me; *
that I have taken to my bed
and will never get up again.
9 Even my best friend, whom I trusted,
who broke bread with me, *
has scorned me and turned against me.
10 But you, O LORD, be merciful
to me and raise me up, *
and I shall repay them.
11 By this I know you
are pleased with me, *
that my enemy does not
triumph over me.
12 In my integrity
you hold me fast, *
and shall set me
before your face for ever.
 13 Blessed be the
LORD God of Israel *
from age to age. Amen. Amen. Psalm 41

Dear Auntie,

Thank you for your letter and all the news you sent my way. I am sad that you can't come for the wedding, but I am glad you and the baby are healthy. Thank you also for your generous gift! It will help us so much as we are starting out. There is so much we need for setting up a household, and, with a child on the way.

Mama and I ventured out to the market yesterday to purchase some final needs for the wedding. We also needed to get supplies for our trip to Bethlehem. I ran into some friends I have known all my life. These girls are my age and at first they were friendly and polite. Then they started teasing and saying awful things about Joseph. They also called me names. I burst out in tears and Mama yelled at them and they ran off laughing. I had to come home and let Mama make all the purchases alone. Once I got settled back at home, Papa rushed to help Mama carry home the supplies. It took me a long time to stop crying. I was so hurt.

It looks like the wedding is any day now. Papa and Joseph don't want any delays after what happened yesterday. Men from our temple keep confronting Papa, as if he's done something wrong. So, Papa has sent Philip to collect the Rabbi and the "festivities" will begin shortly after he arrives. Jospeh has been very comforting and calm during this time. He refuses to listen to any criticism, rock solid in his conviction that we are listening to God alone. We pray together, especially when I am overwhelmed, and helps me focus on the boy growing inside of me. God's child!

Sending so much love and prayers! And please pray for me! I need it!

Advent Three - Mary Letter Day Eleven

Advent Three - Mary Letter Day Eleven

The Collect
Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament Isaiah 35:1-10

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God's people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

 Psalm 146:4-9

4 Happy are they who have the
God of Jacob for their help! *
whose hope is in the LORD their God;
5 Who made heaven and earth,
the seas, and all that is in them; *
who keeps his promise for ever;
6 Who gives justice to
those who are oppressed, *
and food to those who hunger.
7 The LORD sets the prisoners free;
the LORD opens the eyes of the blind; *
the LORD lifts up
those who are bowed down;
8 The LORD loves the righteous;
the LORD cares for the stranger; *
he sustains the orphan and widow,
but frustrates the way of the wicked.
9 The LORD shall reign for ever, *
your God, O Zion, throughout
all generations! Hallelujah!

The Epistle James 5:7-10

Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

The Gospel Matthew 11:2-11

When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ “Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

Dear Auntie,

I am so glad to hear your good news! I am so excited that little John is now with us. So glad that you are well after delivering that little miracle and Uncle Zechariah regained his voice so soon. I do hope Jospeh and I can come for a visit before our little one arrives. Unfortunately, things have gotten more complicated here.

Joseph recently heard from the occupying authorities that he would have to show up in person in his hometown to pay taxes and to register for the census. His family is all from Bethlehem and he was born there. That is quite a haul! He and Papa talked about sending Jospeh by himself, but the local magistrate said his spouse of fiancé should go as well. I am getting so big and not really excited about a long trip before the baby comes. Mama is sure we can get there and back long before the baby comes. The wedding will have to happen this week before we go.

Sometimes, Elizabeth, I have moments of discouragement and find tears rolling down my face. I know all of this is of God, and it seems that the world is working against us. Mama and Papa are very careful in town now as some feel they came say horrible things about us. Jospeh has been so patient and comforting. He reads me from the Psalms when I get discouraged and reminds me of all the songs we learned as children. We sit outside after dark and talk about our hopes and fears about when our baby arrives. We often get laughing about our shared worries. He reminds me that God is always with the faithful and those who call upon his name.

I hope you are healing well and enjoying every moment with that beautiful little boy!

Much love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Ten

1 In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame; *
deliver me in your righteousness.
2 Incline your ear to me; *
make haste to deliver me.
3 Be my strong rock,
a castle to keep me safe,
for you are my crag
and my stronghold; *
for the sake of your Name,
lead me and guide me.
4 Take me out of the net that
they have secretly set for me, *
for you are my tower of strength.
5 Into your hands I commend my spirit, *
for you have redeemed me,
O LORD, O God of truth. Psalm 31:1-5

Dear Auntie,

Well, these past few days have been quite overwhelming. Mama is crazy with plans and cooking for the wedding. Since I have been sick, she won't let me help her, and insists that I eat every few hours to regain my strength. Mama is a wonderful cook, thank goodness. Papa has arranged for your rabbi to be with us very soon. And Mama has fashioned a beautiful dress for me to wear that hides my ever-swelling belly.

There have been some incidences that really shook me. Some women screamed at Mama while she was at the market. They said horrible things to her about me and about Joseph. Why would anyone attack my Mama? She the most faithful and kind person I know! Some people won't patronize Joseph's shop anymore and have said horrible things to him. They don't know how good a man and a carpenter he is! The wise women must have gossiped, and it has caught on like a wildfire. Then last night, some men stopped Papa right outside our door, as he was coming home and were very angry and mean. I heard part of what they said, and it was so cruel! These are our neighbors!

Auntie, I know you time has almost come, and I know you have dealt with great challenges. I pray that your labor is fast and gentle. You deserve something simple in this crazy world. Please let me know how you are doing. I miss you so much!

love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Nine

1 Do not fret yourself
because of evildoers; *
do not be jealous of
those who do wrong.
2 For they shall soon
wither like the grass, *
and like the
green grass fade away.
3 Put your trust in the
LORD and do good; *
dwell in the land
and feed on its riches.
4 Take delight in the LORD, *
who shall give you
your heart’s desire.
5 Commit your way
to the LORD; put your
trust in the LORD, *
who will bring it to pass.
6 The LORD will make
your righteousness
as clear as the light *
and your just dealing
as the noonday.
7 Be still before the LORD; *
wait patiently for the LORD.
8 Do not fret yourself
over the one who prospers, *
the one who succeeds in evil schemes.
9 Refrain from anger,
 leave rage alone; *
do not fret yourself;
it leads only to evil. Psalm 37:1-9

Dear Auntie,

I am so sorry for not writing when I first got home. I was very ill when we got back and everyone was very afraid, including me. I couldn't keep anything down and could only sip water for two days. Jospeh stayed right by my side and held my hand throughout. Mama was worried that I would lose the baby. In her panic and fear, she called for the wise women, our local ones. We knew our secret would be out, but she was afraid for my life and for the child.

The good news is the sickness has passed and was probably brought on my something I ate. And, the baby is safe. The wise women came and examined me. How embarrassing! They listened to my belly, felt the child and closely examined my private parts. They said everything was fine and that the baby was growing well and has a strong heartbeat. We expect my situation will no longer be kept quiet since I am sure they will talk. Let them!

For now, I am on bedrest after that tough time. Jospeh is here every day and reads to me from the psalms. He quiets my fears and reminds me that our wedding is very soon. Then no one can say anything vile about us. I am still quite weak. Mama is feeding me broths and soups and fussing over me. Sometimes trauma can tear people apart. God blessed me with a family that draws closer when challenges arise. How fortunate I am! Thank you for our time together, I have grown so much in faith because of you.

love,

Mary

Mary Letter Day Eight

1 To you, O LORD,
I lift up my soul; my God,
I put my trust in you: *
let me not be humiliated,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.
2 Let none who look
to you be put to shame; *
let the treacherous be
disappointed in their schemes.
3 Show me your ways, O LORD, *
and teach me your paths.
4 Lead me in your truth and teach me, *
for you are the God of my salvation;
in you have I trusted all the day long.
5 Remember, O Lord,
your compassion and love, *
for they are from everlasting.
6 Remember not the sins
of my youth and my transgressions; *
remember me according to your love
and for the sake of your goodness, O LORD.
7 Gracious and upright are you, O LORD; *
therefore you teach sinners in your way.
8 You guide the humble in doing right *
and teach your way to the lowly. Psalm 25:1-8

Dear Mama,

Joseph is here and will spend the night before bringing me back home. We have a lot to discuss and will have a visit with Rabbi Saul in a little while. I am a little bit nervous about the talk with him. Elizabeth says he's very understanding and believes my story. Still, I am worried about the reception we will get. There is no denying now that I am with child. My belly gets rounder and more prominent by the day. The days of sickness have passed which I am so glad of. It was hard never knowing what would make me sick or when I would be overwhelmed by nausea. Now I am hungry all the times it seems!

Joseph tells me that you have had some challenges at home. Nosey neighbors saying rude things. I really am sorry for all the trouble I have caused you. I would never, never want you to be hurt in any way. I said yes to God, but I guess I never thought through the consequences of my actions. It was so overwhelming, and the angel was very convincing. And of course, I trust God and know I made the right choice. Only, Mama, I never want you or Papa to be hurt and ostracized in your own hometown. I pray God will protect us all!

It's time for us to go to the Temple and visit with the rabbi. I will tell you all about it when I get home. Kiss Papa for me.

Love,

Mary

Advent 2 - Mary Letter Day Seven

Advent 2- Mary Letter Day Seven

The Collect
Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Old Testament Isaiah 11:1-10

The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19

1 Give the King
your justice, O God, *
and your righteousness
 to the King's Son;
2 That he may rule
your people righteously *
and the poor with justice;
3 That the mountains may bring
prosperity to the people, *
and the little hills
bring righteousness.
4 He shall defend the
needy among the people; *
he shall rescue the poor
and crush the oppressor.
5 He shall live as long
as the sun and moon endure, *
from one generation to another.
6 He shall come down like
rain upon the mown field, *
like showers that water the earth.
7 In his time shall the righteous flourish; *
there shall be abundance of peace
till the moon shall be no more.
18 Blessed be the Lord GOD,
the God of Israel, *
who alone does wondrous deeds!
19 And blessed be
his glorious Name for ever! *
and may all the earth be filled
 with his glory. Amen. Amen.

The Epistle Romans 15:4-13

Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles, and sing praises to your name"; and again he says, "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people"; and again, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him"; and again Isaiah says, "The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope." May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel Matthew 3:1-12

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’” Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. “I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Dear Mama and Papa,

Thank you for having me come here for a visit. I have learned so much from Auntie Elizabeth. This town is quiet and the whole community is so supportive. We walk out every day and everyone greets us. We sit by the river, and she tells me stories of her childhood (and yours). You were quite feisty when you were a little girl! We also eaten very well, and I have had fewer incidents of feeling sick to my stomach. She has been teaching me which herbs to chew when I am feeling sick. She's a walking library. I think she is getting close to her time, within a month or so. The wise women really want her to stay in bed because of her age, but of course, she refuses! I think I will have Jospeh come get me soon, so that we can make our plans together.

I know you said you were having trouble finding a rabbi to marry us. Zechariah writes on a tablet, since he cannot talk, and told me their rabbi would come any time. He will arrange for us to meet with the rabbi when Joseph comes to get me. I think we should have the ceremony sooner than later, since my belly is getting rounder by the day. I realize we have to do everything quietly, but at least we can have a good faithful rabbi at our wedding. Elizabeth has also offered to host the wedding her, but that might be too much for her, I think. A little gathering at home is fine with me.

I am feeling so much stronger both in body and in heart. I was so afraid when my first dream came. I knew it was impossible and that you, Papa, Joseph and the world would reject me. But I have been here and know that the child Elizabeth is carrying is a miracle, a voice needed by God. My faith is strong now, and your love and support means the world to me!

love,

Mary

Mary Letter ay Six

1 Protect me, O God,
for I take refuge in you; *
I have said to the LORD,
“You are my Lord,
my good above all other.”
2 All my delight is upon
the godly that are in the land, *
upon those who are
noble among the people.
3 But those who
run after other gods *
shall have their troubles multiplied.
4 Their libations of blood
I will not offer, *
 nor take the names of
their gods upon my lips.
5 O LORD, you are
my portion and my cup; *
it is you who uphold my lot.
6 My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; *
indeed, I have a goodly heritage.
7 I will bless the LORD who gives me counsel; *
my heart teaches me, night after night.
8 I have set the LORD always before me; *
because you are at my
right hand I shall not fall.
9 My heart, therefore, is glad,
and my spirit rejoices; *
my body also shall rest in hope.
10 For you will not abandon me to the grave, *
nor let your holy one see the Pit.
11 You will show me the path of life; *
in your presence there is fullness of joy,
and in your right hand are
pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16

Dear Mama,

I arrived safely here last evening. You'll be happy to know that Philip was a wonderful driver, going slow and carefully the whole way.  When I arrived, Auntie came running out, looking like a young girl.
Despite being round with child, she embraced me and danced with joy. Although Uncle Zachariah doesn't speak these days, he was overjoyed as well. We celebrated with a wonderful meal, (Philip joined us before he headed on) and stayed up late talking. What a wonderful welcome!

I woke up this morning late and was feeling under the weather. I tried to eat a little breakfast but was then very sick to my stomach. I felt awful! Auntie reassured me that she has had many days like that and that it would pass. It did after I spent most of the morning with my feet up. Auntie is making sure I drink plenty of water and has taught me some tricks about living with a child growing within. She is also teaching me some prayers to recite when I am feeling overwhelmed and what psalms to read when I need a lift. They are both so supportive and kind.

Mama, I miss you and Papa, but know this is a good thing to be apart for a time. We will have plenty of time together after the baby is born! I am so grateful that you did not throw me out! I know accepting our stories was hard, You are so brave and the best mom a girl could ask for.

Sending much love.

Mary

Mary Letter Day Five

1 I love you, O LORD my strength, *
O LORD my stronghold,
my crag, and my haven.
2 My God, my rock in
whom I put my trust, *
my shield, the horn of my salvation,
and my refuge; you are worthy of praise.
3 I will call upon the LORD, *
and so shall I be saved from my enemies.
4 The breakers of death rolled over me, *
and the torrents of oblivion made me afraid.
5 The cords of hell entangled me, *
and the snares of death were set for me.
6 I called upon the LORD in my distress *
and cried out to my God for help.
7 You heard my voice
from your heavenly dwelling; *
my cry of anguish came to your ears.
 Psalm 18:1-7

Dear Auntie Elizabeth,

The excitement and euphoria of Joseph's dream and my parents accepting my story has fully passed. Now, the hard work of finding a rabbi to marry us, keeping me safe from prying neighbors, and all the arrangement Mama feels we need to make, consume every waking moment. I hardly know Joseph, so I suggested that we have some time to get to know each other. Papa bellowed, " you'll have a lifetime to get to know each other, once you are married!" I think he will relax when I am no longer his "problem." I'm pretty overwhelmed by all of this and am not sleeping very well. I often slip out into the garden at night, where it is cool, and I can think and pray. Looking at the stars helps me keep things in perspective.

Mama is suggesting that I come for a visit with you very soon. She has arranged for Philip, her cousin to take me to you. He has a comfortable cart for me to ride in and there will be room for all the provisions Mama will insist on sending along. Our garden has been very abundant, and she wants to share the produce so as not be so overwhelmed. I am really looking forward to being with you. It's too hectic and anxious for me here. I think they'll make the wedding arrangements while I am gone, which is fine with me. I suggested that Joseph comes and get me, so we can have a chance to talk without listening ears and prying eyes.

Auntie, you have so much to teach me! You calm and faithfulness are evident, and I want to learn to be more like you. I know I am young, but I have a big responsibility thrust on me. I need all the help I can get.

Love,

Mary
