Jesus called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.” Mark 8:34 – 9:1
We each have burdens that are hard to bear. They might be a recent loss, a physical illness, a worrying family or mental or emotional anguish. Some crossed are hidden to others, some so apparent and defining. Some folks who are considered religious, seem to be perfect and blessed. But like my Momma used to say, "You know you're getting close to God when the devil is working overtime!" We can shroud and hide our crosses, or we can pick them up and follow. Every day we have a choice, every day we are invited to believe that is more than these, our personal burdens.
Jesus is talking with a large crowd. Many want to follow Jesus. They think it might be fun, exhilarating and constantly joyful. Yet the truth of a faithful life, is that we carry our scars and burdens with us. The road is often rough and challenging. It is not blissful but hard work. And there are blessings and love abounding. Yet we are mortal humans, we are frail and broken and we still hurt and can hurt others. Following means shouldering our humanity and seeking daily after God.
Today, I ask God to help me joyfully shoulder my burdens. May we all follow, trusting that the load will be lightened as we love and share Good News.
