When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. Matthew 16:13-20
Some years ago, I served as interim at St. Peter's Church in Sitka, Alaska. It was indeed built on a rocky hillside overlooking the harbor. It was the home of their first bishop, Bishop Peter Trimble Rowe. I loved serving there, watching the harbor from my second story window, wondering what life was like when he first arrived. When Jesus says these words to Peter, I wonder too what he was imagining. What is most important to this story for me is that Jesus built his church on the most human, fumbling, loudmouth fisherman ever. Not a saint in life, Peter blurted out what was on his mine, gave in to fear and wore his heart on his sleeve. This always give me hope for the church since all of us in leadership, lay and ordained alike, are imperfect human beings. We are called, despite ourselves, to carry the love of Jesus to the world. Even though we feel wobbly, broken, foolish and failing, the love of God in Christ continues through us here. Amazing!
Loving Creator, you entrusted the world to our hands
and gave us the power to carry your love to the world.
Lord Jesus, come and heal us so we might be your church here on earth.
We are selfish and greedy, full of pride and attitude
we fail your mission every day and often feel like quitting.
Lord Jesus, come and heal us so we might be your church here on earth.
You gave us Peter as an example of leadership here
human, vulnerable and needing your love and support daily.
Lord Jesus, come and heal us so we might be your church here on earth.
When we trip and fall, you pick us up and restore us
when we are lost and wandering, you bring us home.
Lord Jesus, come and heal us so we might be your church here on earth.
When the world turns against us and we are excluded
you draw us back in and make us your people once again.
Lord Jesus, come and heal us so we might be your church here on earth.
For you are the Lord who came and dwelt in human flesh
and you love us and redeem us for the sake of the world.
Lord Jesus, come and heal us so we might be your church here on earth. Amen.
