Gathering the Brood

‘Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you, desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” ’ Matthew 23:37-39

As a mother of three wonderful women, I always want to gather them up and hold them when trouble happens. The desire to protect those we love is often overpowering. It seems as it must be instilled by the Creator, for we hear Jesus aching for Jerusalem and his desire to gather them as a brood for their care and protect them. If we broken and fallible humans can know what that kind of love is, how much more does God ache to protect us as we flail and wander into all sorts of messes. As we move to General Convention as a church, I pray for God's protection for us all. May we honor our prophets and messengers and be blessed by all who we walk with in the coming days.

Loving Creator, Lord of this round earth
may we know your love as a deep aching
to gather us and swaddle us in our troubles
binding us together as one family, one people.
Help us to love like you have taught us
help us to listen before we speak and scream
let us be your family, your people
so that all our communities might be healed. Amen.
