Stand By Me

A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
“You are those who have stood by me in my trials; and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” Luke 22:24-30
I have friends I have known for a very long time. We may live far from one another now, but if they needed me, I would go to them. The friends I have held on to are those who have seen me in good times and bad, who have walked with me in the loneliest of places. We're not friends because of what we can get for each other, but simply because we love exactly who we are, just as we are. Friends are always willing to help and serve.
The disciples were arguing over their places and relationships. Jesus knew this about them, as God knows we humans love to compare and argue. In the long run though, what counts every time, is love. Love that is humble and willing to serve. Love that stands by one's friends in crisis and in celebration. Friendship that puts aside pettiness and picks up a towel to help with the dishes.
Today, I give thanks to God for the friends in my life and want to be renewed to serve. May we all stand by those who have walked rough roads with us, showing forth the love of God as we serve.
