Then he told them a parable: ‘Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. ‘Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.’ Luke 21:29-36
Summer is here and the heat and humidity encompass us all here in New England. The highways and byways are overhung with greenery and the flowers and trees are in bloom. We have waited for summer and now we have summer weather to complain about. Jesus was encouraging all who would listen, to pay attention, living faithfully despite the distractions and worry of our lives. The disciples had no idea how quickly their time with Jesus would be done. No change in seasons, no hard turns in our lives will separate us from the love of God. We are promised that his love and words will never fade away.
Wondrous Creator, source of all life
we marvel at the blooming plants
and gather in the shade of leafy trees
blessed by your love in every season.
We often stray from the good road
distracted by our selfishness and pride
we forget to see the signs you show us
fail to listen to your words of love.
Help us today to stay focused on you
give us the faith to trust your words
let our lives be dedicated anew to serve
that we all know that God is truly near. Amen.
