Fulfilling the Law

‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:17-20

Jesus was surrounded by detractors whenever he spoke. His compassion and love were often questioned. The religious leaders of his time were known for being very liberal with their sense of the law for themselves, while being quick to judge others and seek punishment for minor infractions. Some human behaviors never change. We find ourselves in a world that is quick to judge while reluctant to forgive. We like the law to come down hard on others, while we all want mercy. Jesus invites us to live into the fullness of the law which is love. Love completes and goes beyond what the law suggests and tries to enforce.

Wondrous Creator, you put love in all of us
despite our human tendency towards selfishness
you gave us hearts of compassion and mercy
and built your law on the bedrock of love always.

We want the sinners to be held accountable
yet we do not want to be held responsible
our law is often me first and everyone last
while you gave your life so all may thrive.

Help us to be always ready to love and forgive
may the mistakes and hurts we may inflict
be countered with humility, love and forgiveness
so others might experience the true law of love. Amen.
