I Am With You Always

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’ Matthew 28:16-20

The disciples were facing radically uncertain times. After their teacher's crucifixion, they were convinced that the authorities would come after them. Most struggled to believe that he was resurrected, and even after he came to them, some still doubted. Yet even in their weakness and as they doubted and were terrified, Jesus gave them all authority on earth. He sent them out to serve the people promising to be with them always. And, Jesus gives us his authority and strength, even when we are stumbling, weak and terribly afraid. And in every moment of darkness and light, weakness and strength, in fear and confidence, he is with us always.

Eternal Creator, you draw near to the people
as a parent envelopes a terrified young child
you surround us and hold us tenderly close
and remind us of your love when we are terrified.

In our moments of confidence and strength
we think we are capable and can face anything
yet when the cruel forces in this world attack
we cry out to you like small, vulnerable children.

Help us to see you with us in every moment  today
may the small tasks we take on remind us that
you have given us the strength we need for today
and that you will be beside us in every challenge we face. Amen.
