Treasures in Heaven

‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ‘The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! ‘No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. Matthew 6:19-24

In our country, the gap between the haves and have not is getting wider and deeper. Too many are focused on how they can monetize everything rather than how they can help others. If we are all focused on personal gain, we forget how to be kind, compassionate and how to share. We burn the true wealth we have, love, family and faith, so we can get rich and be spoiled. We all know and understand what Jesus is talking about. It is often hard to so, since everything costs too much and we have to watch every penny. Yet our Creator, knows and loves us and ask to share what we have as we are able, and we will be blessed here and eternally.

Wondrous Creator, you give us our daily bread
and you bring the sunlight to warm the whole earth
and make the crops to grow to feed the world.

We have an urge to stockpile and hold our riches
while others live on the edge of death daily
and we refuse to see them and refuse to really care.

Make us aware of the needs around us and open hearts
so that we might be generous in all that we do
and grateful for all we have been given in these days. Amen.
