Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Indeed we call blessed those who showed endurance. James 5:7-10
The Fourth of July or Independence Day was always a huge celebration in our household. For nearly 50 years, my parents hosted the Cape May Point Bicycle Parade on their lawn. Hundreds of thirsty and hungry kids and adults would end up at our house after biking several miles around the Point. My folks loved offering that hospitality and celebrating the true spirit of independence and community. So for today, I offer not words, but pictures of what love, patience and welcome truly are - the true American spirit lived in a small way, touching so many.
A Blessed Fourth of July to one and all!
Collect of the Day: Independence Day
Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and who lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
For the Nation
Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
