Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:11-17
On my counter I have a hand made ceramic tumbler with many, many plastic straws in it. Everytime I get one in a drink, I wash it out and add it to the tumbler. It has begun to look like a colorful flower arrangement. I won't throw them out, but I really don't know what to do with them. I tried melting them into knitting needles or crochet hooks, but that was a terrible failure. I am still searching for a creative way to repurpose them. Doing my part to save Mother Earth is a challange.
John's Gospel tells is that God sent Jesus to save and not condemn the world. Yet, the world we live in today, seems to be as messed up as it was in Jesus' time. Even those of us who try to live a faithful life find oursleves mired in politics, unintentionally fueling vechicles of creulty and abuse. People and the whole planet are at a terrible risk these days. We are also reminded today that Jesus is still in the midst of our mess and we are not alone in our efforts to love and show compassion across our globe.
Today I ask God to help me never flag in my effort to be compasionate and creative in all my relations. May we be those who encourage the care of one another and of "our fragile earth, our island home."
