Christmas Day 2023 - Mary Letter Day Twenty

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see-- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. Luke 2:1-14-20

Dear Mama,

Well, despite our best efforts to get home to you and Papa, our little one is born today, here in Bethlehem, the City of David. He's here and he's perfect! I wrote to Aunt Elizabeth when it was just starting and I was terrified. Now I can write and say how grateful I am for all you and Auntie taught me. I kept you and Papa in mind throughout the ordeal. I recited the prayers and psalms you taught me, though sometimes I stumbled and made up some words. The pains were terrible and although I tried to be brave I did cry out now and then. The wise women and Anna were great help and guided me each step of the way. Joseph wouldn't leave the area, even though the pain and my cries really bothered him. He was so brave. The women were amazed and told me their husbands never hung around! I am tired but so full of energy and joy. I don't want to sleep, just watch this little miracle as he sleeps. The women promised to come and check on me regularly to make sure I am resting and healing.

His little toes and fingers are perfect. His face and dark hair are like an angel's. His eyes are bright, and he seems to focus on faces. I was so afraid and now I cannot imagine what I was afraid of, Mama. He warms my heart, even when he cries.  After all was done and I was washed up, the wise women left us. Anna and Samuel, our innkeepers, brought us food and gifts from the guests in the inn. They are so kind and generous. Late in the night, we were woken by sheep outside the stable. Joseph went to investigate and there were many shepherds, led by a young boy, who came running in, wanting to see the baby. They told us that angels had appeared to them and told them to come and see. Amazing! They gave us blankets woven from their wool and thanked us for this great gift!

Mama, I don't know why I get afraid, and doubt covers me. Their visit tells me that God is with us, even in the strangest of places, in occupied territories and noisy cities, as well as in the most awkward and painful of circumstances! I know you and Papa have been so worried. And, God is truly present and real at all times. I miss you both so much and can't wait for you to see this wonderful boy in person! It will be very soon.

 Much love,

 Mary

A Litany for Christmas 2023

Wondrous Creator, source of all life

You bend yourself towards us in all seasons

Bringing light to our broken, hidden places

And joy in your constant, loving presence.

Lord, help us to carry your Incarnate love with us today.

We often stray away like lost sheep

We are afraid, covered in anxiety

We seek foolish solutions to our pain

Yet you lean in and seek us at all times.

Lord, help us to carry your Incarnate love with us today.

The world turns to violence and destruction

Yet You are our source of hope and freedom

You set the prisoners free and feed the hungry

And gather us all back home at your table.

Lord, help us to carry your Incarnate love with us today.

You turn our tears of sorrow into tears of joy

And open our hearts to new and abundant life.

Lord, help us to carry your Incarnate love with us today.

Dark skies and cold winds will not keep you away

You love us as good parents love their children.

Lord, help us to carry your Incarnate love with us today.

Oh Jesus, born in a humble and lonely place

Visit is in our simple hearts, open to you this day.

Lord, help us to carry your Incarnate love with us today. Amen.
