Mary Letter Day 18

Jesus said, “Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. But if that wicked slave says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ and he begins to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know. He will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 24:45-51

Dear Momma and Papa,
We made it to cousins Ruth and Abner's house. They welcomed us with open arms, despite my misgivings about them. We must have seemed a frightful mess when we got there. After we left home, and your two were out of sight, some men came after us, screaming and throwing rocks. One nicked Joseph on his faced and made him bleed. He started running and the mule followed. After we got out of range of those men, when we were still running, the mule stumbled and I fell off! I landed in some bramble bushes and got quite scratched up. We hid off the road for a while, until we were sure there would be no more attacks.

We were very late arriving, yet they were so kind. First Ruth cleaned us both and and made sure we weren't hurt badly. Then she fed us soup and delicious bread. With full stomachs, we almost fell asleep at the table. They had a nice soft bed for us to sleep in. Neither of us even undressed! We fell onto the bed and slept through the night and part of the morning.

They are very concerned about us and the baby, and want us to stay and extra day. Abner has gone to fetch a doctor and the midwife, just to be safe. They want us to strong again before we leave their house. Such love and care from folks who barely know us! Joseh is anxious to get to the city for the registration, so we can get back again. Papa, he has been so good to me, gentle and respectful. He is also very funny, surprising me with silly stories to make the journey pass quickly. Despite the challenges, I do believe we are going to be fine. I'll write more soon.

love,

Mary
